Griffons split another doubleheader
HAYS, Kan. -- Now, if the Nevada Griffons can just get a sweep.
For the second straight night, the Griffons split a doubleheader in Jayhawk League action.
One day after splitting with league-leading Derby, Kan., on Thursday, the Griffons split with the second-place Hays Larks on Friday night. Hays won the opener, 3-0, before Nevada bashed 12 hits in a 10-3 landslide win in the nightcap.
The Griffons, currently in fourth place in the standings, behind third-place El Dorado (Kan.) Broncos, are seeking to make a late-season run into the National Baseball Congress World Series. A sweep could put them in the right direction.
Nevada is 21-17 in league play and 28-17 overall. Hays is now 24-13, 29-14.
In Friday's second game, Griffons designated hitter Greg Lagreid went 2-for-4, including a three-rundouble during their eight-run uprising, as they turned a 3-2 deficit into a commanding 10-3 advantage.
Griffons left-hander Tyler Applehans, an Emporia State University pitcher, scattered eight hits over six innings to put the clamps on the Larks.
Center fielder Nick Adams also was 2-for-4 and scored two runs. He also stole his 21st and 22nd bases of the season. Catcher Daniel Dellasega was 2-for-4 and had two RBI.
Nevada totaled 12 hits, as every Griffons player in the starting lineup had at least one hit.
In the first game, Larks pitcher Bobby Lewton outdueled Nevada's Nathan Fritz in the 3-0 Hays win.
Larks designated hitter Ricky Angel homered and drove in two runs.
Lewton shut out the Griffons on a four-hitter -- singles by Tommy Fitzgerald, Jimmy Dever and Walker Moore and a double by Lagreid.
The two teams also played doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday in Hays.
The Griffons return to Lyons Stadium on Tuesday for a doubleheader against Joplin, starting at 6 p.m.
