Vernon Countians can still apply for telephone refund

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

The Internal Revenue Service estimates 30 percent of Kansas and Missouri taxpayers could have received a bigger 2006 federal tax refund but didn't ask for the Telephone Excise Tax Refund, and Vernon Countians are likely to be among them.

This one-time refund is owed to just about anyone who paid for long distance telephone service, including most cell-phone users, between February 2003 and August 2006.

So far this year, 92.1 million taxpayers, 71.6 percent of all individual tax return filers, have requested telephone tax refunds totaling $4 billion. About 99 percent of returns requested the standard refund, from $30-$60 based upon the number of exemptions claimed on the 2006 individual income tax return.

"If you did not ask for this unique refund, you can still request it by simply filing an amended return," said IRS spokesman Michael Devine.

Those who did not request the refund and want to, must file a paper copy of IRS Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, and enter the credit on line 15. The form can be found and printed from the IRS Web site, IRS.gov, or ordered by calling (800) 829-3676.

"The Form 1040X was updated to make requesting the telephone excise tax refund easier," Devine said.
