Cottey College adds third sport
The Cottey College Board of Trustees approved the addition of softball to the intercollegiate sports offered on the Nevada campus.
The first step was hiring a head coach, and Cottey has hired Gregory Tietz as its first head softball coach.
Tietz will assume his duties immediately and will begin actively recruiting players for the 2009 spring season.
Tietz earned an Associate in Arts in Criminal Justice from Rose State College in Midwest City, Okla., and his Bachelor of Arts in History at the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Tietz, the husband of Dr. Julie Tietz, Cottey professor of Psychology, owns three years of college softball coaching experience at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, which is a National Collegiate Athletics Association Division-III school.
For two years, Tietz served as an assistant coach and was head coach for a year as well.
In 2001, Tietz was named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year.
The next phase for Cottey's softball program is recruiting athletes to play for the Comets.
Cotty is a member of the National Junior College Athletics Association, participating in Region XVI.
