Comets prevail over Allen County in five-game contest

The Cottey Comets defeated Allen County in a five-game matchup on Friday, Oct. 12, in a match that kept everyone guessing as to who would come out on top until the end.

In game one, "the Comets came out with such intense motivation and confidence, that it was a pretty easy win for game one. There was communication, teamwork, and just an overall sense of gratitude from my players having another home match to show off to the fans," said head coach Marla Kannady Foreman.

The Comets prevailed, winning 30-22.

In game two, the tables turned about halfway through, with the Comets falling 22-30. "It was like an even trade between the first and second games. The scores were identical, only opposite in win/loss. There was a sense of 'game on' mode from Allen County," Kannady Foreman said.

In game three, nothing seemed to go Cottey's way and the Comets fell again, 17-30.

In game four, "Somebody turned the lights back on us again, and my players never looked back. They had a 4-0 run on them at the first of game four, before Allen County scored their first point.

Kannady Foreman admits the Allen County team made her me a little nervous, when they closed the Comets' 8-point lead to 2 late in the game, but Cottey hung on, winning game four 30-26.

In game five, with the home town crowd behind the team from the outstanding comeback in game four, momentum seemed to be on Cottey's side.

"We were ready to take the victory in five games. With the way game three had ended, it was hard to tell what my players were going to do. Several times this year my players have come from behind in points, to make a difference. This match, they came from behind in game win/loss, and it was exciting to see them turn it around like they did. Determination was the key word I would use to describe my team on games four and five," Kannady Foreman said.

Although it was a tough match, the coach had high praise for the team.

"I can't tell you how badly my heart was beating from the first part of game five until we made the final point. However, my players seemed to have it under control the entire time. I told them afterward that I was very proud of them in games one, four, and five. That is the team that I love to watch," Kannady Foreman said.

Game five went to the Comets, 15-11.
