Knights unable to gain first victory

WALKER, Mo. -- The Macks Creek Pirates beat the host Northeast Vernon County Knights 83-35 Friday night in a contest that was never in doubt after the first couple of minutes.

"The boys played hard," NEVC assistant coach Kevin Lurten said after the game.

But what can you say about that kind of a loss, he added.

Although the Knights played hard, they were unable to overcome the intense pressure from Macks Creek that caused numerous turn-overs and forced most of the NEVC players to attempt forced shots from the outside.

NEVC, 0-4, was behind 23-12 after the first quarter and 47-25 at the half.

The Knights went scoreless for the first four minutes of the third quarter while the Pirates added 16 points before Damien Hansen found the basket to make the score 63-27 to start a eight point run by the Knights to narrow the deficit to 63-33. Macks Creek came back with six unanswered points to end the quarter 69-33.

Two free throws by Cody Terry gave the Knights 35 points while the Pirates added 14 for their final 83 points.

Cody Terry led the Knights with 20 points and went 12 for 12 free throws, followed by Damien Hansen with 9 points including one free throw. Cody Scott put up four points and Isaac Wilkins two points.

The Knights' next game will be December 11 at home with Miami (Mo.). The girls are scheduled to play that night as well.

Northeast Vernon County's girls are set to take part in the Hermitage (Mo.) Tournament beginning Monday. The tournament is scheduled to run through Friday night.
