Eric Wade/Herald Tribune-- With the help of parents and instructor Janie Terry, local children participate in tumbling classes sponsored by Osage Prairie YMCA.

Nevada, Mo. -- "Look what I can do!"

The statement, uttered by tiny voices, rings in the gymnasium at the Osage Prairie YMCA.

With winter in full swing, the Osage Prairie YMCA is sponsoring indoor youth tumbling classes for children ages 18 months to 7 years. Led by instructor Janie Terry, the baby tumble, tiny tumble, and kids tumble classes are slated to start new sessions on Jan. 8, 2008.

These courses are designed to teach children in different age groups better coordination, incorporating music, listening, gymnastics and movement. Also including small class sizes, these programs allow children to experience active learning and movement with one on one attention.

The baby tumble is a program geared toward children ages 18 months to 3 years and provides opportunity for active chlidren to release some energy, while at the same time learning better coordination and increasing flexibility. Classes are limited to six children each, and will be held every Tuesday from 5:30 to 6 p.m. or Thursday from 10 to 10:30 a.m.

"Our baby tumble class is an excellent starting point for all children 18 months and older. " said program director Jonathan Roberts. "The class is designed to help improve balance, hand-eye coordination, and fitness, all of which are important in a child's development. The kids love having objects to climb, walk and jump over while the parents enjoy an opportunity to interact with their children during classes...a more hands-on approach for both the chldren and parents. I am very pleased with the great job Janie has been doing!"

The tiny tumble, for children ages 4 and 5 years, incorporates some of the same concepts and principles of listening and movement as the baby tumble, but geared toward a slightly older audience with more involved routines. These sessions will be limited to 8 chlidren each, with classes running from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and 5:15 to 6 p.m on Thursdays.

The kids tumble, available to children ages 6 and 7, incorporates more advanced principles of gymnastics and movement than the other programs, teaching the same key ideas to and older, more advanced audience. The kids' tumble will be limited to 10 students per session, with sessions being held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

All of these programs will include an admission fee of $20 for YMCA members, and $35 for non-members, with financial aid in the form of fee reduction subject to a demonstrated need. Tuesday classes will are scheduled from Jan. 8 to March 11 and Thursday classes from Jan. 10 to March 13. Registration forms and information on these and all other YMCA programs are available at the Osage Prairie YMCA at 500 W. Highland.
