August Rasmussen Jr.
August Rasmussen Jr., 88, of Fort Scott, formerly of Moundville, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Fort Scott, following a brief illness. He was born Feb. 25, 1919, in Arthur County, Neb., to August Rasmussen Sr., and Nanna Marie Christiansen Rasmussen, He married Avis E. Morreli, on Sept. 27. 1941, in Alameda, Calif. She preceded him in death on May 19, 1998.
August grew up in Nebraska and graduated from the Arthur County High School. He taught school for one year prior to entering the United States Army for two years. They came to Vernon County in 1954 where he raised cattle until his retirement. He also worked for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita, Kan., for five years. August was an avid card player and enjoyed senior dances.
Survivors include eight children, Dale Rasmussen and his wife Kathryn, McLean, Va, Jim Rasmussen and his wife Sue, Moundville, Rod Rasmussen and his wife Cindy, Florissant, Mo., Jack Rasmussen and his wife Jane, Springfield, Mo., Vicky Yokley and her husband, at Nevada, Mo., Connie Montague and her husband Doug, North Kansas City, Mo., Regina Rasmussen, Nevada, and Jay Rasmussen and his wife Dee, Coppel, Texas; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Cross, Lewellyn, Neb., and Paula Boyle, Loveland, Colo., and special friend, Josephine Brillhart, Fort Scott. In addition to his wife Avis, he was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., on Monday, Jan. 7, at Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada, with John Nichols officiating. Interment will follow in National Cemetery, Fort Scott. Friends may call now and until the hour of service and the family receives friends 4-5 p.m., on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 6, at the funeral home.
