Hornets over power Bobcats in District 12 semifinals at Drexel

Hume boys reached the finals of the Class 1 District 12 basketball championships Wednesday night after knocking out Drexel 63-39 in front of a packed house at Drexel High School.
The Hornets pounced on the Bobcats out of the gate, building a 14-3 lead by the end of the first quarter. What followed was nothing short of a rout. Drexel trailed both quarters before fouling off of a made Hume basket with 0.8 seconds to play in the first half. Hume made one of two free throws to score three quick points in the final 10 seconds and took a 32-13 lead into half-time.
Hume's second half opened similarly to the first. A 7-0 Hornet run to open the third quarter prompted a Drexel time-out and put them away for good. Hume coasted for the rest of the half, clearing its bench late in the fourth quarter.
After the game Hume head coach Scott Morrison sounded content with his team's effort.
"Our defense in the first half," Morrison said was the most impressive aspect of Hume's performance. "In the second half we had to slow it down because we had a lead but our defense in the first half I was pleased with. I think we've got it covered, we've practiced pretty hard for this tournament."
Hume faces Montrose in the District 12 championship game 7:30 p.m. Friday at Drexel High School. Montrose advanced as the No. 2 seed to the finals by beating Amoret-Miami 46-42 Thursday at Drexel. The winner of the championship game will advance to face the winner of the Class 1 District 11 tournament March 4 at Clinton High School.
Clinton Irwin and Camerion Hinton led the Hornets with 20 and 16 points, respectively. Ryan Austin was hot from behind the arc, hitting four treys to finish with 12. Cody Franklin had 10 and Andy Yarick scored 5 in the win.
Drexel was led junior Shane Henry with 16 and freshman Austin Allen with 11. Senior Jordan Raffety contributed 10 in the losing effort for the Bobcats.
