Local group to observe Crime Victims' Rights Week with walk, ceremony set for April 10

Wednesday, April 9, 2008

April 12-19 is National Crime Victims' Rights Week, a time for all Americans to learn about victimization, reflect on the cost of crime to society and to promote laws, polices and programs to help victims of crime rebuild their lives. This year's theme, "Justice for Victims, Justice for All," envisions a strengthened national commitment to the nearly 24 million Americans harmed by crime each year, according to information provided by the Vernon County Council on Families in Crisis.

The Council's executive director, Martha Sander, said, "Anyone who is victimized by crime can receive information about their rights, and the many services available to assistant. If you or someone you know is a victim of crime, we can help. Or, if you'd like to volunteer for victims, many opportunities are available."

In recognition of National Crime Victims' Week, the Vernon County Domestic Task Force will be holding a walk and ceremony on Thursday, April 10, at 6 p.m. The walk will begin at Dr. Lovinger's Office building at 625 S. Ash and be led by the Vernon County commissioners as well as representatives of the Nevada Police Department, Vernon County Sheriff's Office, Vernon County Ambulance District, the Nevada City Council and the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Walkers will proceed to the Vernon County Courthouse, where a ceremony and candlelight walk around the Square will be conducted.

The ceremony will take place inside the courthouse and will feature Nevada Mayor Pro Tem Bill Gillette as the keynote speaker.

Local Girl Scouts will provide the colors, followed by the singing of the "Star -Spangled Banner" by Scott Theis, an invocation and other musical selections.

Norther Commissioner Neal Gerster will read a proclamation that was signed today, followed by a short memorial service and victim speak-out session.

The event is open to the public.
