Eagles split before storms hit
Herald-Tribune
ALTOONA, Kan. -- Uniontown split games in a triangular here Thursday night with the second game called just as lightning began to come through the area.
"The storm that stopped the game followed us from Altoona to Uniontown," Eagle head coach Alan Shinn said. "When we got back to Uniontown, a tornado alert sent us to a storm shelter in the building for 45 minutes before the girls could go home."
Uniontown (4-5) won the opener over host Altoona-Midway, 12-2, in five innings. The Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings.
Allison Warren (4-4) was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits and one walk while hitting one batter and striking out eight.
Diana Ayers was two for three at the plate with a triple. Cassie Schwalm had two hits. Ayers, Schwalm, Jessie Camac and Rayma Ridge stole two bases each. The Eagles as a team stole 12 bases.
"We played well both offensively and defensively," Shinn noted. "Allison pitched an excellent game."
Ayers started the second game as the pitcher but was injured and had to leave after 2 1/3 innings. Ithaca Marlier and Julia Ayers finished up and didn't allow any runs while giving up just two hits (both off Marlier) and one walk (off J.Ayers).
Humboldt, a Class 2-1A State Tournament qualifier last season, won the second game 6-0. Cubs pitching held the Eagles to three hits -- one each by D.Ayers, Warren and Schwalm.
"Defensively, we played well," Shinn said. "This game was proof that we have improved from the beginning of the season."
In their second game of the season, the Eagles lost to Humboldt 14-1.
The Eagles have one date left on their regular-season schedule, which will take place at 4:30 Monday in Uniontown against Chetopa.
