American Legion announces changes in Fourth of July event

Thursday, June 12, 2008

Due to recent unforeseeable circumstances, the scope of the planned Fourth of July "Wear Red on Friday/Supporting our Troops Rally" in Nevada has been modified since the Nevada Daily Mail published a story previewing the event on May 17.

Following is updated information as provided by the American Legion Leon Ogier Post No. 2.

"While there may not be rides on the 4th of July, The American Legion continues to support 'Wear Red on Friday.' which has indeed grown into a nation-wide campaign.

"The local American Legion will have a booth at Nevada's upcoming Bush-whacker Days, and in keeping with the purpose of American Legion posts nationwide will be available to provide to the community, information and enlightenment in support of all our nation's troops and their families, past, present and future from the founding of our country to the present day. Further information will be published as available regarding the Fourth of July.

"Wear Red on Friday is not in any way political campaign, rather it is a community-based humanitarian effort to prevent the same kind of disenfranchisement of our troops in Iraq (and elsewhere in the world) that occurred during the latter years of the Vietnam Conflict No one wants to see our current military troops -- or their families -- treated now as we were then by many of our own country's citizenry or the government.

"Today's military is all volunteer, which means they were not ordered to be in the military, they choose to be in the military. They deserve and should always get the unwavering support of the civilians of this great but troubled land that we so readily take for granted and call 'home.' Remember, regardless of whether you support the Middle East conflict; please don't take out your frustrations on our military men and women. They did not start the conflict, but they were and are daily asked to risk their lives to carry it on until further ordered."
