Nevada's Comets best Springfield Baptist two to one

The Cottey College Comets volleyball team earned their 17th win of the year as they defeated Baptist Bible College in Springfield Thursday night.

"Set one was just like the other two times we played BBC," head coach Marla Kannady Foreman said. "Only this time, we didn't make it a second game lull."

The Comets were down throughout the set -- at times by as much as seven points -- and tried to make a comeback near the end, but eventually fell short, losing the opener 20-25. Set two was a much stronger performance, as the Comets came out ready to play and were able to take the win by a final score of 25-16.

The third set was and even more dominant performance by the Comets as they came out firing and scored the first seven points. The Comets stayed aggressive throughout the set and eventually were able to take the victory, 25-6.

"Set three was a crunch time for my players and they really worked on improving their stats," Foreman said. "We actually kept the hammer down, finally, and had that 'killer' instinct that I had been looking for all evening."

The final set of the night was much the same as the third, until the Comets allowed BBC to make a run near the end to make it a somewhat close game. At one point in the set, the Comets were up by as much at 12 points and eventually went on to win the set and with it, the match by a final score of 25-18.

Cottey's record now stands at 17-6 -- tying the best season record ever by a Comets volleyball team -- with one match to go against Northeast Oklahoma A&M Community College to decide their seeding in the NCJAA Region XVI tournament in St. Louis on Nov. 7 and 8. If Cottey defeats NEO, they will face Meramec in the tournament and move to the East Central bracket. If not, the Comets will face Florissant Valley and go to the Longview bracket.

Jesse Jargowsky led the Comets on the night with seven aces, while Ashleigh Bryson put up 23 assists. Anna Cruse and Lauren Jenkins tied with a team-high 10 kills and four blocks in the match and Carmen Kintz came up with 17 digs.
