Shaw campaigns for Southern Commissioner's seat

Thursday, October 30, 2008

Kennon Shaw, a Republican, and a resident of Bronaugh, is seeking re-election to the office of Vernon County Southern Commis-sioner.

Shaw was appointed to the office by Gov. Matt Blunt to fill the term vacated by Bonnie McCord when she was elected to the seat of presiding commissioner. He was sworn in as southern commissioner in January 2007

Shaw said he has enjoyed his term as commissioner, and that he has striven to learn the laws and procedures relating to serving in that role.

What experience do you bring to the commission?

It has taken two years in office to learn the laws and business laws that are different from my 25 years teaching in the school district, and there are still many things to learn.

My experience has been colorful and varied; I was with Crane Company in the startup, hiring the crew and helping get it operational. When the Vocational School started I assisted in the planning of the lessons, equipment purchases, etc. The years on the Moundville Township Board provided me with a working relationship to the problems in the townships. I continue to serve as President of the rural volunteer Fire Department Board of Directors.

I had four years as test engineer in Kansas City, and have continued to run my own plumbing, heating and refrigeration business throughout the majority of that time. The experience of being in the office of commissioner has been valuable in this and I might add, very interesting and challenging. It has been a pleasure to serve in this capacity.

How would you perform duties differently from your opponents?

I can only judge myself and attempt to treat everyone else as I would like to be treated.

Why should the voters choose you over your opponents?

The county has invested time in my previous two years as commissioner.

There have been trips to the various sites of learning, other Commissioners from other areas allowing for fresh input, the pleasure and assistance I have received from working with the present Commissioners. They have been invaluable in this process of learning. It would be to my edification to continue in this endeavor.

My family has been in complete support of the extra time and effort this position as commissioner has taken. They are encouraging and helpful in this endeavor. We work together as a team to help make Vernon County a safer place to raise our families.

Thank you very much for considering me as a continuing Commissioner.

Kennon Shaw's Democratic opponent, David Shaw, did not respond to a questionnaire sent to him.
