Eldon Gibbs Powell
Eldon Gibbs Powell, husband of Eileen Leona (Kreienkamp) Powell, son of the late Carter Williams Powell and Eula Elizabeth (Gibbs) Powell of Shamrock, Mo., father of Eula Elizabeth (Powell) Rowland, Eldon Stanley Powell and Eva Jane Powell; father-in-law of Gary David Rowland passed away Dec. 9, 2008, in the Excelsior Springs Convalescent Center in Excelsior Springs, Mo.
Eldon was born on Oct. 18, 1917. Educated at Wellsville, Mo., High School; University of Missouri-Columbia and Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., in the field of education, he was a teacher and school administrator for 34 years. Eldon also served in World War II with the paratroopers, was in the Aleutian Islands and was also the recipient the the Good Conduct Medal. Throughout his life, he was active in community service organizations, the Lions, Masons and Order of the Eastern Star. He held offices of President and district governor for Lions, master of the lodge and patron of OES.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, his three children and his two grandchildren, Scott David Rowland and David Powell Dolan; and one great-grandchild, Paige Brynja Rowland; sisters-in-law Evelyn Powell of New Orleans La., Annette Horn of Washington, Mo., and Carmen Kreienkamp of Ellisville, Mo., and nieces and nephews all over the New Orleans area.
Private services for Mr. Powell will be held at a later date at the National Cemetery in Springfield, Mo., under the direction of Lewis-Hoagland Funeral Home in Schell City.
