Uniontown softball opens with victory
UNIONTOWN, Kan. -- Uniontown's softball team began its second season of existence with a 11-1 victory over St. Paul in a Three Rivers League game here Thursday afternoon.
The scheduled second game was rained out. In fact, Eagle head coach Alan Shinn said that the last three innings of the first game were played in a steady drizzle.
Taylor Shook was the winning pitcher. She pitched all five innings -- the game ended on the 10-run rule -- and allowed one unearned run on one hit and two walks while striking out seven. Shook was also two for three at the plate with a double, a stolen base and a run batted in.
Candice Clayton and Hope Jurgensen each had two hits. Heather Schnichels, Jessie Camac and Tiffany Poyner each had one hit. Jurgensen and Schnichels each drove in two runs. Poyner also had a stolen base.
The Eagles had nine hits as a team.
"We were able to consistently hit the ball, move runners and score effectively," Shinn said. "Defensively, we were always in position to make the correct play, although we did not always execute the play.
"Overall, I was pleased with the way the girls played and it was great to start the season with a victory."
Uniontown is scheduled to travel to Yates Center Tuesday.
