May 16 car show to benefit Relay for Life
Sutherland's parking lot at 1201 East Austin Boulevard is where the first Rods and Rides Car Show will be held on Saturday, May 16m from 3 p.m. "until the last car leaves" said D.J. Vaughn organizer of the event.
Vaughn, a lifelong resident of Vernon County, decided to stage the event as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Soci-ety's Relay for Life.
Vaughn who said he just likes helping people has put this show together a bit hastily, but thanks to his sponsors thinks there will be a good turnout for the event. "I don't like seeing people suffer," said Vaughn, so when he was approached by a co-worker, a member of the Relay for Life Planning Committee, about getting involved, he decided that this was one way he could be part of that effort to help people.
He has pretty much single-handedly put this thing together and is doing it so all of the proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. Shelly Ward, Committee Chair for the Vernon County Relay for Life Planning Committee thinks this is a wonderful event that "will raise awareness that the American Cancer Society and the Relay for Life are here in town." It's really a team effort she said.
The show will feature six different categories of cars, actually one is specifically for motorcycles, and there will be trophies awarded to the top three places in each category. Food and drink vendors will be on hand to quench your thirst or quell your hunger. There are going to be a lot of door prizes given away and a 50/50 raffle will send one lucky winner home with some money in their pocket. The Chapter 3 Band will also be set up and play a mix of 50's, 60's and 80's music throughout the afternoon.
"Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy the fun," Vaughn said. There is a $10 entry fee and there will be a cruise down Austin Boulevard from Sutherland's to Wood's after the show. Vaughn thinks it will be a good opportunity to see a lot of cars, because "the good roads all around Nevada make it easy for people to get here from any direction."
Vaughn said the only thing that would stop the show would be severe weather, and in that case, he has set Sept. 9, as a make-up date for the event. For more information about the show, contact D.J.
