Two Nevada teens murdered over weekend

To the victims families: my heart goes out to you in this trying of times, but remember god has a plan for each and everyone of us. God bless

I hope the families do not read the previous comment to indicate that these murders were part of God's plan. They aren't. God does not plan for these things to happen; it is part of free will and a young man did this, not God.

My prayers are with you and I do hope you find a sense of peace and comfort at such a terrible time.

A search on public records site states Mr. Mason was sentenced to 60 days in drug rehab? on 3-30-09 should he not have still been confined? Is this just another case of swinging door policy administered by our wise courts? Some children of today have no fear or regards for or of law or law enforcement. I do feel that no parent should have to bury their children and have the deepest sympathy for the families. However, it is sad to say and think that their journey has just begun.

Be strong and diligent, and remember you are not alone.

To the families of all three of the children, my deepest thoughts and prayers are with you. I can not imagine what you are going through.

I believe the court systems WANT to give the children another chance, all children. I do not know this boy or why he was ordered to a rehab., but I think courts do give kids (and adults alike) a fair opportunity to 'grow up' and change their lives. Sometimes the court system is wrong, unfortunately. And I'm not saying the court system is always right (because it isn't), but think when you were 17. most of us made bad choices and some of us have to live with the regrets for the rest of our lives, like this boy.

I do not know these children, all I know is that it is tragic, for ALL the families involved!

My son knew Anne and also the young man who is accused. We must pray for all of the families involved in this tragedy. This is the latest in a string of tragedies involving young people in our area that started last November. But this is the first one that appears to be intentional.

I just want to let everyone know I live in this neighborhood and have for 18 years and when I moved to this neighborhood it was a nice quiet neighborhood. We had 3 police officers living in this neighborbood. Since then these police have moved out, I am still here and I have contact the police several times about the drug activity going on in this neighborhood. But do we ever see a cop no, not unless someone has called them on another dispute. When I contacted them they told me to write down license plates numbers and makes of the cars. Like I have the time and what are we paying them for. Also one of them told me I just needed to do what he did and just move. Is that going to solve the problem? That was the stupidest think I had heard of! I think the FBI needs called in to clean up this town. It is sad that this happend but I am not surprised from all I see going on and I can guarantee we will see more. Unless our law inforcement grow some. And the FBI comes in and cleans house.

If they would crack down on these slumb lords in this neighborhood and hold them responsible for the trash they rent to things would be different.

They can do better back ground checks before they hand them a key. We have an x-highway patrol,x-sheriff, x-police officer that lives in this neighborhood that owns 7 houses in two blocks that rents to nothing but trash. One night we were woke up at midnight with 2 kids fighting in my front yard, one had a knife and one had a metal rod. We called the police they never came down here the dispatcher hung up on me and guess who owned the house? They did catch one of the kids in a truck at the corner of our street but never came to talk to the other one involved.

Then about 2 weeks ago I went to pick my son up from school and came home and there is 3 cop cars in front of our home. And again they were dealing with a fight at guess whos rental house?

Our cops have job security dealing with his rental houses. He gets away with parking dump trucks on the public side walk and blocking it for weeks. Right now he has brush pilled on the side walk so you have to walk around in the mudd to go around it and no one in a motorized wheel chair can get through there.so why did we go to the expense of making our sidewalks handicapp accessible? And yes we have called the city but I guess because of who he is and his daughter and son inlaw work for the city nothing is done.

I would love to move but with 2 kids in college and just remodeling our home we cannot afford to. And would never get out of our home what it is worth. And my mother in law lives in this neighborhood to. So we just have to hope we can dodge the bullets.

My little boy just never understood why he couldn't walk around the block by himself or with our dog. and now that this has happend I ask him, now do you understand? Its sad we have to live like this but with the neighbors we have we are like prisoners in our own homes while the renters come in and take over. When you have all different colors shapes and sizes living in one home and no one works in that home, that should tell you something.

It is sad this had to happen but we are fortunate that it didn't happen at school.

Hope our law in forcement wakes up and covers this area better.

I went to school with all three teens involved. It is crazy to think that this happens with people I walk with down the halls everyday. I cannot believe that a 17-year-old is capable of brutally stabbing two innocent girls, I guess that goes to show how this country is changing. I am praying for all of the families involved. I am sure that it is extremely rough for Annie's and Kylie's families. We have to remember that Mason's family is also going through a lot. No one raises their child to commit murder. I am sure they are as shocked as the rest of us. May God be with all the families.

First of all you think Nevada Mo is the quietest town in the world Stuff like this happens everywhere else but here it happens here too and you guys think its the most intresting thing in the world if the president was shot tomorro you guys would say oh well can you imagine what Garretts parents are thinking and feeling they are going through rough times like the victims familys are. So my prayers are with both familys and Garrett finds God.

A small town boy not really exposed to the system and tough city life and gangs can you imagine what he's facing in prison? Just think about the prison movies and what the new guy has to go through getting beaten till he has to give it up so he can survive, then they get pimped out for cigarettes etc. He'll be wishing he killed himself instead of the 2 girls. Yes, all 3 of the families need to be in your prayers.

My heart goes out to the families. It's terrible to think of what our children are faced with this day and age. I grew up in that neighborhood and used to ride my bike up and down the side street at the age of four with no worries. The fact is that this can happen in any neighborhood, rich or poor. Our teens have more to deal with then we did and it's up to us as adults to educated our kids on safety. Kids are having sex earlier and drugs and alcohol are becoming more and more common in our teens. All we can do is hope and pray they are safe everyday and make good decisions and not give in to the temptations of things that can get them hurt. I think that it is extremely important to teach them about the dangers of the internet, cell phones,and encourage them to finish school. Our children really need us!!!!

As far as "Classylady's" comment previously...... Is it really necessary to blame one particular landlord? Maybe you should look at the positive that he has brought to the neighborhood. He truely takes pride in his properties and is continually cleaning the yards and the houses. Also, law enforcement officers can't do background checks for personal business. When a landlord has troublesome tenants they also have a timeline and process for evicting them. No one wants a bad renter. The Dump truck and brush would show that he's cleaning things up. Most of the alleged drug activity is more North of you and is not coming from his properties. What about the house behind you? That's not his either. While you're busy with the "beautyshop gossip", make sure your facts are straight. His son in law does not work for the City any longer and his daughter does not get him special treatment. Who would want to live by a gossiper who's always in everyone's business? That can be just as bad as the people you are profiling.

I think that we all need to take a minute and say a prayer for all three of the families envolved and the rest of the comunity. Although you may not relize it, it will change us all.

I think that we need to stop blaming drugs and do something about it. If you know that there is drug trafficing going on take down the plate number and make of the car. you have time to call the cops but not do what they ask. We have to help them also. The number of people that live in this town out numbers the cops and deputies.

May peace find your family and heal. I did not know any of these children either but will pray for the families just the same!

To Nevada, families and friends of the thee people involved in this crime, I want to send you heartfelt prayers. I live in Kansas City and I think we just get so jaded to this type of behavior up here because we see so much bad stuff. It is a shame to see a small town deal with drugs, crime and murder. I am uplifted by a lot of the comments posted here by people living in Nevada. I am glad to see people supporting your community during this tragic time. My heartfelt sympathies go out to the young girls families. My sympathies also go out to the Mason family. I am sure they are going through there own turmoil right now as well. I have never met any of these kids but my heart is just so heavy with sorrow for these families. As well as for him. Watching all the news broadcasts and seeing this scared little boy basically. Yes i understand he did a horrific thing. And yes he needs to pay for his actions. But do we need to stand outside of the court house and yell hateful things to him? Families will have there time in court to address all of these feelings.Yes i do understand what u are going through. Wasnt long ago our family was in that courtroom because someones actions took away a loved one in our life. Let the justice system do its job. That is what it is here for after all. i want to say that my prayers are for all families involved in this tragedy of the stabbings that have taken place in our town.it has been said that the mason family have been receiving death threats.for the love of god,who ever you are that are doing this,my question is why? has there not been enough damage done already? the mason family members are not responsible for the actions commited by their son, brother,grandson,or nephew. their lives are as shattered and their hearts are as broken as anyones could be. and i happen to know that they also cry for the two innocent girls that have been taken from their familys.the boy who commited this crime is not the boy they have loved for 17 years and they are devastated. they must wake up everyday for the rest of their lives and deal with what garrett has done for the rest of their lives. they did not committ these murders.our community must give support to this family as well as the familys of the two sweet girls whose life was taken.forever these 3 familys will never get over this. i dont beleive there is such a thing as closure.you just have to learn to somehow someway go on, but never a day will go by that these familys will not hurt inside.please stop the madness.all involved in this tragedy are hurt and angry but please dont direct your anger at the mason family.i pray that these 3 familys will someday, somehow be able to find peace again in their lives.

p.s. what ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? this boy has already been condemned without a trial. is anyone else involved in this? did he act alone?

you can read the court papers and probable cause statement at www.ky3.com. no one elses name was mentioned. he had clothes in his trunk covered in blood. put 2 and 2 together. Besides that, the girl told the neighbor who stabbed her right before she died.

Horserider---you said it right. I feel SO SO SO much for the families of the two girls that were murdered. I cannot and hope i never will have to imagine what they are going through.....it's astounding to me that this has happened, and all involved were just kids.

But also, please keep the Mason family in your prayers. They too are hurting...we raise our children the best we know how, never expecting that anyone, let alone your own flesh and blood, could do something so devastating and ruin so many lives, including their own.

I didn't know any of these of folks involved personally, but have been through a lot of tragedy this year myself. I think there is little doubt this young man is guilty of this brutality, but I don't think the entire story has come out yet. Judge not, lest ye be judged. Nevada has not been a fun place to live this past year!!

My heart and prayers goes out to three families involved. I have kids the same age range as the kids involved in this. I'm shocked at the rumors that people have said without knowing anything, and appalled at the interviews shown on TV with people speculating. I expect all the speculating coming from the schools, because these were kids...kids...kids that were still in school!!! All involved where kids!!! But to watch adults join in on these rumors is absolutely appalling!!! One of my children came home from school telling me one of the rumors said about the girls and I told her I don't want to ever hear that she joined in on the rumors. Unless it is being said at a court house, since the stupid things are being said on News reports, she is not to repeat any of those things. What happened to News reports stating the facts, not "I heard" "he said that she said"...The facts are there is witnesses to the victims own words...there is clothing that is getting the proper test done on...and there is two kids murdered and a kid being accused of this murder. The shock is still there, families destroyed, and people wanting answers to the motive so bad that they are willing to make up anything to grasp onto! But lets not add to everyone's anguish by rumors, rock throwing, courthouse step screaming, and ignorant assumptions.

Maybe we need to stop and think before we just jump the gun. We are not the judge or jury, Stop and put yourself in his families shoes!! What would you do if this was your kid ..how would you feel,act,and say? (Be truthful with yourself when you answer that!) There are young kids in our town hearing mean and nasty things, is all of this helping our kids?? As a community we need to pull togetheir for everyone.

What are we teaching our kids, to hate, Why? No family should have to go thru this, we can't be with our kids 24/7, Were your parents with you 24/7 at this age? I don't think so. As far as the yelling at the courthouse, our law enforcement has a hard enough job the way it is, this was seen on national tv, it was totally uncalled for! This is hard enough on everyone, everyone in town knows each other, if it's family,classmates,and so on,If you can't act like a adult,how are your kids going to act?

Well Said Classylady! The town of Nevada does need a major make over. I went to school with some of the cops in Nevada and boy they where no saints either and should not be on the police force. The kids in this world are not scared of the law, adults, etc. If they dont do something about these kids our world is in for disaster.

ALL of these familys are in a living hell right now.and the insane way that those acted at the courthouse with screaming and cursing when the familys are already overwhelmed with greif was way out of line.lets do what we can as a god fearing community to help these people find some kind of peace instead of stirring an already boiling pot. and to no surprise, theres always more to the story,whether we will ever know what all took place that awfull day remains to be seen. but no matter what the reason is that everyone is looking for as to why this hidious crime was committed it will never be enough because there is no reason that something of this nature should have ever happened.

Horserider, once again I TOTALLY agree with you. We need to come together as a community and try and make sure this does not happen again in the future. I am no expert and have no idea what to do to stop a tragedy of the magnitude, but certainly we the ADULTS can stand up, stop talking crap and RUMORS and show our kids that we are a united community hear to HELP not always criticize. That would be a start.

I of course am in NO WAY justifying this boys actions but know there is always more to a story than what is said in the media and at the coffee houses. Let try and find out the truth, and if others are involved, make sure all are help accountable.

Again my thoughts and DEEPEST prayers are with the Anne and Kylie's family, as well as with Garrett's....they all have a burden to carry and live with that none of us can imagine.

My prayers go out not only to the victims and their families, but also to the accused killer and his family. I wish I knew why this happened and chances are I might not ever know.

This is a terrible tragedy!! And, I mean a really, really, terrible tragedy!

It's not up to us to determine if Garrett is guilty! It's up to the court system. Because he's innocent until proven guilty. That's the way this country works.

My dad is a lawyer and one of my classmates, Casey Crain is a Nevada Police Officer.

I grew up in this town and I've lived here all my life and I think it's a wonderful place to live.

But, when a terrible tragedy like this happens, you just don't know what may happen next. One of those girls went to my church. I didn't know it until I saw her obituary in the paper.

These girls didn't deserve this. They deserve to be alive and look forward to the day they start their own families as well as their own career.

I don't know if we will ever know all the answers. But, these girls are in heaven, where they're safe and sound.

And, as a community, we need to pray for these three families!

what would anti-depressants have to do with it. Millions of people take them every day. this does not make them kill people.

It, however, didn't specify he had to be housed in a rehabilition facility. It just said "drug abuse program." That could be out patient...without being in the courtroom when he went to court on the drug charge, we have no way of knowing.

Nevada Police Department, as any other department in any other town, is flooded with calls all day, everyday. They have to respond to peoples dogs running around without a leash, people who are simply mad at a business or person, or something as rediculous as someone needing the police to tell their kids to "listen to them." If you've never worked in a law enforcement agency, you have NO RIGHT to judge the way things work. All law enforcement agencies deal with crap calls and yet you want them to have time to sit in front of your house and watch YOUR neighborhood. What about other neighborhoods in Nevada that need assistance? Also, have you not read up on the BIG drug bust that Nevada, Vernon County, Barton County and so many other agencies poured sweat into? It was called Operation Buckshot and they stopped A LOT of meth from coming into the city. It took them from 2005 until 2007 to bust that...so don't think it's a one day process...again, if you don't or haven't worked in law enforcement, then don't comment on it...

It is sad to think when this community is going through such a large lose, the fine citizens are pointing blame at people there to help them. Yes, there is a drug problem in Nevada, Missouri...there is a drug problem in AMERICA...no city is excluded. Instead of accusing people and gripping about things, become involved and make a difference. Until you take that step, just sit in your house and keep you mouth shut about the way things work.

My heart goes out to all three families. It's a terrible thing that that has happened. I fear that as much as society has changed there will be a lot more problems developing; and it scares me being a mom of a 10 month old son, what is it going to be like when he is a teenager? I agree with those who says, a lot has to deal with what goes on within a family and it's home. However, some might have wonderful families, but peer pressure gets the best of most teens. I for one, never let anyone persuade me into doing anything I didn't want to. Anyway, I don't think we should hold just one accountable about the whole drug thing and stuff because it's more than one. It's probably have the community. I do feel deep sympathy for the girls families, they were so young and had so much ahead in life to look forward too. As for Mason's, if he indeed to it, he should get probable punishment, however, I feel sympathy for him as well. What would make someone do something like this? Probably will never know.

My heart breaks for all three familes. There Lives have all took a big blow and a horrible thing. The talk and all the rumors make it a lot harder on all involved and sad things is they will just keep coming. I will keep all involved in my prayers. To all that like to gossip think how you would feel if it was one of your own that has been taken from you or one of your own being accused of the terriable ack. God Bless to all familes invloved.

Sorry I have stepped on a few toes. And when it ends up in my front yard it is my business. Also I am a tax payer in this town so I have the right to voice my opinion. Antidepressants have been involved in nearly all (ALL) of the highly profiled killings across the country this past few years. One of the "side effects" in the lit. is "suicidal or homocidal" tendencies. What do antidepressants have to do with it, indeed.

anti-depressants have probably stopped more murders and suicides than they have caused. there are side effects with just about anything people take. Yes, I agree that some of them are extreme, and the side effects are probably worse than the problem being treated. That should fall back on the drug companies and doctors who are forcing them down everyones throats. They prescribe them to just about anyone who can walk and talk.

I can only hope that the families get the answers that the need.

As for the Nevada police they do need to get their act together when they tell people to buy a gun cause they are not going to be able to keep them safe they are only adding to the problem and yes one of our finest has said this to someone I know. They may have a hard job to do but some of them could do better. This is a wake up call for our town to talk with our kids about all the thing that we think could never happen in Nevada mo and to help the make better chooses in their lives a head of them, and to get involved to help to stop the drugs and violence that has been going on for far to long. The police can not do that part alone we need to stop looking the other way and stand up for what right if we can how are kids going to be able to do this

As for Nevada, well I did get smart and I moved out of that town, BUT it's not just Nevada that has problems, the biggest problem is that the towns themselves doesn't wanna see that thier town has problems, so until the people wake up and the "higher" so called people wake up than nothing will change.

You are the one that started blaming a specific person for this and he has nothing to do with this incident. Impossible is only a name and was more for an apposed opinion on a previous blog. If you want to pick on people, they have a right to be defended. There's always two sides to every story. We are all entitled to our opinions.

I was not on a "soap box", you were more concerned with establishing yourself as a victim then you were with the lives of the people involved. The fact is that drugs/crime..... are EVERYWHERE. We all have to make a difference! It's not a "perfect world"!!!

OK "Impossible" I know you are one of his daughters and what I was referring to is the house two houses north of me is a rental and what is living there has several visitors that comes from behind me on Cedar. Several times a day these people cut through my driveway and yard back and forth. SO THAT MAKES IT MY BUSINESS! Also since you know there is drugs north of me, then why isn't something done about it? Since you work for the city police office? And you stated a comment about the house behind me,If you check your records there should be reports of calls made from neighbors that has been reported on this house. But nothing has been done yet. And as far as me being nosey in the neighborhood, well when there is screaming and yelling and cursing going on so loud you can hear it in your house and your kids come in and say mom the neighbors are fighting again. For your protection and theirs wouldn't you go see what is going on? Plus a few years ago the police dept. and the mayor told us we all had to stick together to clean up this neighborhood and that if we left town we need to let our neighbors know so they could keep an eye out. And that if anything happened we all needed to call not just one person. So its not Beauty Shop talk, Its neighborhood Watch. Also as far as your comment about positivity coming out of these houses, just remember there is two sides to every story and I guarantee you, you can walk up this street and ask anyone that has lived here any length of time, and they will tell you we haven't seen anything positive come out of these houses yet. So you can bash me all you want you do not live in this neighborhood, you do not see what we see or have to deal with what we do.When the cops are called and when they come their comment is "this is the worst street, I don't know what it is about this street but it is the worst" They have told more than one of us that. You are just taking up for family and I understand, blood is thicker than water. But don't put your nose where it don't belong. And it is pretty sad when they are telling home owners and tax payers to move out of Nevada so these people can come in and take over. That is sad. So move on with your life and stay out of mine.

For the record: Garrett Mason is not related to Mickey/Laurel, any of their 7 children, grandchildren, etc. I mention this because I have had several calls, questions and sympathies offered in regards to this matter. I have never met or even heard of him until this.

I think some are getting 'a little off' the subject of this article. Sounds like there are some underlying issues on Main street that could better be served by open dialogue instead of online pseudo anonymous bashing of city government, police, homeowners and others.

To my knowledge there has never been any open discussion from concerned neighbors to the north regarding rental housing issues other than complaints. Sounds like the same whining of the have not's versus the have's I've heard all my life.

I have rentals of my own and know how much hard work goes into them. I have had great tenants and also had the worst. I have tried to help out people who need a place for their family to live and things worked out great for all and sometimes the owner gets the royal shaft. Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't 45% m/l of the housing units in Nevada rentals?

I guess we could round up all of 'those people' and ship them off to ?????????

This landlord you speak of hasn't owned the house very long and before that, you didn't like the one that lived there then. It's got history. As far as my comment about drugs north of you, there are a lot more rough looking characters and houses up the road. Drugs are everywhere! I wasn't referring to anyone in particular. I just don't understand why you are blaming and bashing one landlord. At least he lives in the neighborhood and can keep an eye on his properties also. The house behind you is an observation as I drive down a public street. I have nothing to do with the police enforcement either. They are very busy and have alot of people to protect and area to cover. This isn't the worst neighborhood in town either! Your last sentence wasn't too "Classy" at all. We don't have to agree, that's what opinions are for, so no need to get hateful!

Let's get back to the real subject here about the tragedy that took place and try to find a way to make this neighborhood better. That's what all the families and property owners need.

And that is why the chief of police said he moved out of our neighborhood. So who keeps trying to keep this conversation going. Are you sure he is "free" on bond? I am pretty sure he is still in jail locked up.... but i could be wrong. IF he is out on bound, shame on the legal system!

I viewed the docket entries on casenet. Nothing is listed about bonding out. I am sure he is still locked up.

Thank you all for your comments. I'd been considering buying one of the two houses available around the 700 block of North Washington and now won't touch them with a ten foot pole. If it's not the screaming and slum lords you mention, it's the bitter folks in the area that I don't want to live by. I'm a working professional, making decent money and was envisioning a nice house with a pretty yard for my family. I'm glad I know now what I would have been getting into.

you know this country has an un official motto that i think id like to apply to this town.... Nevada .... Love it or get the heck out.. as far as the victims families im sorry for your losses and hope someday you find the answers as to why this tradic incident happend may go be with you during this difficult time. Back to the town, this town didnt kill those girls this young man if he did it made the choice to take their lives no music no television or nothing else made him do it but him he had a choice when he did what he did there was no one over his head with a gun telling him to kill those girls
