Nevada firefighters train

Nevada firefighter A.J. Terry watches from the ground as Tim Bullard, far left, Nevada Fire Department captain and training officer gives fellow fire fighter Daniel Lukasik pointers on the operation of the ladder on the city's ladder truck. The Fire Department will be taking advantage of the recently vacated parks department building at the northeast corner of Austin and Hunter streets and house just to its' north for training exercises until they are demolished for the expansion of the City/County Community Center. Bullard said that, time permitting, they plan to conduct "all but" exercises. He said that by the use of various techniques, some as simple as putting wax paper inside their masks to simulate the poor visiblility in a fire, there is no need to actually burn either structure and increase the chance of a firefighter's being injured or killed during the training. Bullard said that they rarely get the opportunity to train on a commercial building that is still structurally sound. He said that before the building in demolished he plans to take the doors and some other building components and mount them on frames at their training facility for future training exercises.
