FORT SCOTT, Kan. -- American Legion Post 25 was on the receiving end of a donation earlier this week.

The Brush Beater Jeep Club, based in Fort Scott presented American Legion Post 25 Commander Ken Lyon with a check for $1,000 to help veterans and those currently serving in the military with medical assistance.

"We decided that since most of us were from that region, we wanted to donate locally," Brush Beater Jeep Club President Don VanBuskirk said.

VanBuskirk said the Brush Beater Jeep Club was holding benefits to raise money for the medical expenses of veterans as well as those currently serving in the military. He said they were participating with a national organization known as Wheelers for the Wounded. He added, the organization was planning to have a gentleman travel the country in a modified Jeep and visit every off-road park in the nation. Plans changed however when the organization fell apart six states into the tour.

"When it all fell apart, we had these charities that had already raised quite a bit of money and didn't have any place for it to go," VanBuskirk said. "We decided that we wanted to give it to a local organization."

According to VanBuskirk, the Brush Beater Jeep Club had held two benefits for veterans as well as a big off-road event earlier this month.

He said the event consisted of free admission to the Kansas Rocks Recreational Park, rides in off-road vehicles (if the veterans did not have one of their own), and a free lunch. He added, because the national organization fell apart they were only able to get seven veterans to attend which left the Brush Beater Jeep Club with money left over.

"Because of that, we had tons of money left over that we didn't need," VanBuskirk said.

The Brush Beater Jeep Club is based out of Fort Scott and does most of it's off-road activities at the Kansas Rocks Recreational Park, however members of the club span from Kansas, Missouri, and parts of Nebraska.
