Eagle volleyball sweeps larger schools

RIVERTON, Kan. -- Uniontown's volleyball team swept through a quadrangular with three larger schools Friday night as the fourth-ranked Eagles defeated Columbus, Riverton and Galena in two games each.

"The team played well," Uniontown head coach Jackie Hall said. "And I do mean team. Everyone contributed. Our hitters had an outstanding night as our passers were getting the ball to our setter, Tayler Shook, so she could make good choices at the net."

Uniontown moved up one spot in Class 2A in the latest Kansas Volleyball Coaches Association poll this week and now stand at 11-1 on the season with their lone loss coming to Girard, a Class 4A State Tournament qualifier last year.

The Eagles started off the night with a 25-14, 25-7 sweep of Class 4A Columbus. Shook and Jacey Ermel each served 3 aces. Abbie Smith had 14 kills and Jessie Camac had 7.

Next was the Eagles toughest challenge of the night, Class 4A Riverton. Uniontown prevailed, 25-15, 25-21. Ermel and Smith had 9 kills each and Jessica Schaaf recorded 4.

"The Riverton match was great," Hall said. "We really kept attacking the ball and took them out of their game a little bit. They went to tipping it against us. We adjusted and did a good job defending that."

Finally, Uniontown defeated Class 3A Galena, 25-8, 25-10. Ermel served 5 aces while Camac served 4. Smith picked up 9 kills, Ermel 8 and Schaaf 7.

The Eagle varsity travels to St. Paul, Kan. Thursday where they will play a Three Rivers League match against the host Indians and a non-league match against Southeast.

Junior Varsity

The Eagle JV didn't play Thursday night but did sweep their way through a quad at Southeast Tuesday night. The Eagles beat Riverton, 25-13, 25-13, as Hope Jurgensen picked up 3 kills. They beat Southeast, 25-20, 25-13, as Jurgensen rolled up 3 more kills. Finally, they beat Galena 25-14, 25-14.

The Eagle JV will be back in action Thursday at St. Paul. Uniontown's freshmen play in a tournament at Iola, Kan., today.
