NRTC Building Trades house for sale
Nevada R-5 Building Trades students are finishing up another student-built house at 2013 North Lynn, and it's up for sale. An open house is slated for Oct. 25 between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
The 1,700 square foot three bedroom, two bath home features a tiled dining area, kitchen with pantry and oak cabinets, laundry room, living room with vaulted ceiling, a master bedroom with a vaulted ceiling and walk-in closet, covered deck and three-car garage.
"The house is ready except for the plants and grass seed, which is inside the garage waiting for the weather to plant," Assistant Superintendent Tyson Beshore said.
Construction Technology Instructor Kevin Peterman said that the house has a lot of features that people have come to expect with new housing, including a safe room.
"We built a safe room under the porch," Peterman said. "That is a very secure area."
Peterman said building the house gave the students a lot of experience that will come in handy when they start looking for jobs. However, because of the city codes, students didn't do all of the work on the home.
"Well the city codes wouldn't let them do the wiring or the HVAC," Peterman said. "We have some very talented people but we have to work within restrictions."
Peterman said he wanted to transform part of the warehouse to classrooms so that they could learn wiring and other trades in an environment where no codes would be broken.
"I'd like to build a couple of rooms in there where we could do wiring or have an area where they could do a small area, say 3-by-3-foot space to tile so they could learn the basics," Peterman said. "It wouldn't take much and it would give them training that they could then take with them."
The bidding process for the home is different this year, the bidding will be open and starts Oct. 26, at 8 a.m. Bidders need to submit their bid on a form provided by the school in the central office along with $1,000 earnest money. Bids start at $152,000 and increase in $500 increments. Bidders will be notified if they are outbid and may submit a new bid until bidding closes. Bidding will close at 5 p.m. the fifth business day after the first bid is received.
"That gives us some flexibility," Superintendent David Stephens said. "If we just said bidding would close on a certain date we might not even have any bids by then and we'd close the bidding without getting a single bid."
Standing bids will be posted in the window of the district's Central Office, 811 West Hickory. Bidders wishing to inspect the house should contact Beshore at (417) 448-2000. The Board of Education reserves the right to reject any and all bids.
