Hopkins named NJCAA National Player of the Week
FORT SCOTT, Kan. -- The Fort Scott Community College football coaching staff have named their 'Hounds of the Week for last Saturday's regular-season ending victory over Butler.
The Offensive 'Hound of the Week is sophomore tailback Jasmin Hopkins. Hopkins was also named a Jayhawk Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week and the National Junior College Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Week for his 166-yard performance against Butler. Going into the contest, Butler's defense was allowing an average of less than 50 yards per game on the ground.
Hopkins shared conference honors with Coffeyville freshman running back Mulku Kalokoh, who caught 9 passes for 138 yards and rushed for 46 more in the Red Raven's 24-0 victory over Independence.
Redshirt freshman defensive back Jamel Johnson was named the Defensive 'Hound of the Week for his 10-tackle effort against Butler. Six of those tackles were unassisted and two of those were for a loss.
The Special Teams 'Hound of the Week is sophomore punter Matt Wheeler, a graduate of Fort Scott High School. In his second game back after taking a week off to allow an injured groin to heal, Wheeler punted 11 times for a 38.3-yard average against Butler. He pinned the Grizzlies inside their own 20-yard line four times and had one punt of 47 yards.
The No. 2-nationally ranked Greyhounds host No. 17 Hutchinson in the first round of the Region VI Playoffs at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
