Hutchinson rolls over 'Hounds in hoops

HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- Hutchinson was a rude host to Fort Scott Community College's men's basketball team Friday night on the second night of the three-night Quarterback Classic, beating the Greyhounds by a score of 84-59.

Fort Scott (0-3) plays late this afternoon against the Sterling College (Kan.) junior varsity to close out its visit here. That game tips off at 5:30 p.m. Live stats can be found at hutchcc.edu.

The 'Hounds enjoyed a 4-0 lead in the first 2 minutes and were able to tie the score one last time at 12-12 when Ramell Taylor made two free throws with 13:36 left in the first half.

Joe Mitchell, who led the Blue Dragons with 16 points, gave the Dragons the lead for good on a three-point shot 13 seconds later. The lead grew to as large as 15 points at 39-24 with 45 seconds left in the half. The 'Hounds scored the last four points of the half. Jacob Gougler scored the first two points of the half for Fort Scott but that turned out to be the last time they would get within 10 points.

Hutchinson (2-0) shot 59 percent from the field in the second half, making 19 of 32 field-goal attempts, while holding Fort Scott to 31 percent on 10 of 32. The 'Hounds connected on just six of 25 shots inside the 3-point line (24 percent) in the second half.

Bruce Reed added 14 points and Adonis Gantt added 10 for Hutchinson, which had eight players score at least seven points. The Dragons were 31 of 61 from the field for 51 percent for the game and also made 14 of 17 free-throw attempts.

Taylor was the only Greyhound able to make it into double figures in scoring with 10 points. Caleb Brown added nine and Robert Hatcher, Nathaniel Ward and Jacob Gougler each added eight. Fort Scott shot 30 percent from the field overall on 18 of 60 but made 18 of 20 free throws. The Greyhounds have made 40 of 51 free throws in their two games in Hutchinson after going just 8 for 17 in their season opener Wednesday against Missouri State-West Plains.

Fort Scott outrebounded Hutchinson, 39-38. Ward led the 'Hounds with eight rebounds.
