Habitat home dedication scheduled for Sunday

When Habitat built a home in my neighborhood, thier volunteers blocked my driveway almost every day. They even tried to park in my drive to sell sandwiches to raise money, which is illegal by city health code anyway. And then I found out that the person who got the home had qualified for an $80,000 conventional loan. In fact they had agreed to buy a home before Habitat told them they were the one.

that doesnt doesn't really seem fair since when i was working i tried to get a loan just to built a house nothing fancy on my property it went through then i became disabled and it all went down hill from there, now my vehicle has been repossed in which i called them because i couldn't make the payments and it's still a repo, my credit went down the drain. i have been borrowing from friends and family just to pay my elec and water. and the reason i was wanting a house is the roof leaks on this trailer and when i got it there were holes in the floor. and they qualified for a loan like that that is totally unfair.

This is not unusual. Most of the Habitat homes go to people with good credit and a good income. Contrary to what is written, they do not go to poor people. I know that at least 3 out of the first 4 they built here went to people who had qualified for conventional loans of $80,000 or more.

what happened to sweat equety and voluntering not only on your house but others as well.

They still have to do that. But there are many people who can't get a loan who would be able to make monthly payments on a home.

Just because you qualify for a loan, it doesn't mean you can pay it. We all know that many banks lend way beyond what folks can truly afford.

I love it that Habitat enables responsible home ownership for people in the margins. They don't take people with loads of debt or inability to pay. Sam, some folks may be able to make a payment now, but have a load of other debt that is unsecured that could jeopardize repayment and H4H has to abide by strict guidelines set up by international to help avoid that. It's much more than being able to make a minimum payment.

Lizann, you wouldn't be a candidate at this point for Habitat because you can't pay your bills. I'm sorry you are in a tough spot and hope things improve for you. But confidence in a new homeowner's ability to repay is vital because the payments on existing homes help build future homes. I hope your situation improves and you get on sound footing and can someday take advantage of these people's ability to repay to help build you a home so that you can pay it forward.
