United Way raises more than $100,000

The United Way of Vernon County held its 2009 Appreciation and Awards Luncheon at the Nevada Country Club on Wednesday Jan. 27. During the luncheon, local chapter president Adam Dean announced the total funds raised to date, $106,766.74, was a bit short of the $112,000 goal but he thought the year was still a success. Dean expressed appreciation for "all the work everybody does throughout the year." More than a dozen certificates of appreciation were given to local sponsors, groups, businesses and individuals. Plaques were awarded to community businesses in recognition of their corporate and employee generosity. Recipients are left to right: Highest per capita donation for 3-24 employees, Deanna Giessel of Empire District Gas; 100 or more employees, Becky Overton of US Bank Home Mortgage; Most improved and 100 percent employee participation, Gary Ashby of KCP&L; largest overall contributor, Joy Eason and Barbara Cirkl of 3M Company; and 100 percent participation, Erica Becker of Great Southern Bank. --Rusty Murry/Daily Mail
