Baby chicks at Orscheln Farm & Home

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Chick Days has been a tradition at Orscheln Farm & Home for many years. The chicks arrive at stores the first week of March and stores continue to have them available for purchase through May and again in the early fall, September through mid-October. Customers may stop in and purchase a few chicks on site or may choose to place an order for 25 or more chicks.

Chickens are not the only birds available during the chick event. Several species of birds are available for order including turkeys, ducks and other more exotic breeds of chickens.

Due to the slow economy in the past year and an increased interest in knowing where their food comes from, more folks seem to be raising their own chickens. Also, chickens can be raised right in your backyard so a large acreage is not needed.

Store associates are trained to answer questions on breeds of chickens, types of feed, bedding, lighting and the equipment needed to raise them. Orscheln Farm and Home remains a family owned company and is celebrating its 50th year in business. Since their first store in Sedalia, Mo., in 1960, the company has grown to more than 150 stores across the Midwest. Their philosophy is committed to keeping rural America alive, strong and growing. Orscheln stores continually strive to improve their product selection and services that meet the everyday needs of today's farm and suburban customers.
