Affordable dresses for prom; fun, safe activities for afterward
The prom, it's one of the most important high school experiences for many students, right below graduation itself in importance. It's not just the prom, it is getting ready for the prom and then, what to do afterwards. Fortunately for Nevada students there is help both times.
Before prom there is a lot to do to get ready, and that means finding the right clothes for the event. Kim Bessey can help out. She's in charge of Prom-n-aide, an affordable selection of clothes and accessories for both male and female students that can be rented for a small charge. The $10 rental fee for clothes goes to pay for dry cleaning the garments after they are returned so they will be ready for next year.
"We have dresses and tuxes, we have some jewelry and some shoes and purses," Bobbie Lou Barber, who is assisting with the program, said.
The group is also accepting donations of any prom-appropriate clothes or accessories to expand the program.
"Prom or bridesmaid dresses and tuxes in all sizes would be great," Barber said. "We could use shoes, jewelry, purses, and those type accessories too."
After the prom on April 24 Joann Cash and the After-Prom Committee takes over, and has arranged a full schedule of events to keep students safe after the prom lets out. Tickets for the fun are just $5 and are being sold during student lunch periods.
"We're selling the tickets during the lunch periods from now until prom, $5 gets you into everything," Cash said. "We'll sell them the night of prom too, but we'd prefer they were purchased ahead of time. The money goes to benefit safe, non-drug, non-sex activities. "
Some of the activities will be at the newly opened community center and some will be at other locations, the high school, bowling alley and movie theater.
"We'll have a bungee bull at the community center, Cash said. "We'll also have casino games and pizza, pop and snacks there. We'll have carriage rides around the historic square, there will be two movies at the theater, we'll go bowling and at 3 a.m. we'll have a magician at the high school. Of course, we'll have breakfast too."
In addition to the activities there will be prizes for the participants.
"We'll have prize giveaways with college-type prizes, things the students can take to college and use," Cash said.
Before prom, after prom, and during prom Nevada students will have plenty to keep them happy, occupied and safe, thanks to volunteers who donate their time and energy to their school district.
