Second-year Cottey College students Jessica Martinez and Patricia Martinez (no relation) raised $1,021.05 for cancer research with a 5K run and 1-mile walk held on Saturday, April 3. The project was the culmination of their leadership certification program at Cottey.

Cottey College's LEO (Leadership, Experiences, Opportunity) program is a four-level leadership certification program. Students in their fourth semester of the LEO program may elect to participate in a community service project at the Presidential Level of the program. That level is supervised by Dr. Judy Rogers, president of Cottey College. Jessica and Patricia chose Breast Cancer Awareness as their community service project and a 5K run as their method to raise funds for their charity.

On a beautiful Saturday morning, 155 donors and participants showed up on the steps of Cottey's Chapel for the run and walk. In addition to the run, Jessica and Patricia also sold T-shirts and hoodies with the breast cancer awareness logo on them.

A total of $898.05 received for race entries and clothing -- along with some direct donations -- went to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. One donor issued a check for $123 for the American Cancer Society which was forwarded on to that organization.

"When Patricia and I started out with this project we were expecting a small outcome, setting a goal to raise $500," said Jessica. "However, in the end we doubled our goal and it was an immaculate event that neither Patricia nor I will ever forget. Thank you to all who helped us make our vision possible and helped us succeed in going one step further in helping breast cancer research. We owe it to you for making this possible."

Cottey College is a two-year, independent liberal arts and sciences college for women located in Nevada, Missouri. Its residential student capacity of 350 students typically represents 40 states and 25 countries. Cottey is owned and supported by the P.E.O. Sisterhood, an international women's organization of approximately 250,000 members, making Cottey the only non-sectarian college in the United States owned and supported by women for women.
