Headline 'cute as can be' hair salon opens

A former gas station may seem like an unusual location to put in a hair salon but Michele Murray likes the looks of the old Skelly station on East Subway Boulevard, because she said, "it's as cute as can be."
So that is where Murray opened up her new hair salon, Headline Design. She said she hasn't set the hours she will be open but she is at the salon Tuesday through Friday.
Murray started out working at the Headquarters salon but then decided to work for herself.
"I started out almost 12 years ago working at Headquarters," Murray said. "Then I moved to my house and worked there for about seven years. I've always liked this building, it's cute as can be, and I wanted something in town, I wanted to try something new."
Murray opened the door to the new salon in the middle of June and finds it a good place to be.
"The traffic is pretty steady all day and it's easy for people to find," Murray said.
Dick Shorten, the owner of the building said Murray wasn't the only hair stylist looking at the building as a possible location.
"I had several people, including some stylists, looking at the building before Michele took it," Shorten said. "As a matter of fact I had one who had looked at it and called me back after I already had her (Michele) in here."
Murray said styling hair was something she had always thought of doing.
"It's something I've always wanted to do, ever since I was a little girl," Murray said. "My mom had a daycare and I always played with the kids' hair, fixed it, curled it, everything. I always wanted to do that."
Murray does a full range of cuts, colors, highlights and perms but said perms aren't as popular as they once were.
"I love to do highlights, colors, perms aren't really in right now," Murray said. "The younger ones like straighter hair."
Murray also does men's hair and said that walk-ins are welcome.
"They can come on in, I'll be happy to do it," Murray said. "I do a lot of men's hair cuts."
Murray and her husband, Todd, have three daughters and live south of Nevada.
"I'm married to Todd Murray and we have three little girls," Murray said. "My daughters are 13, 11 and 8."
