Nevada girls' tennis wins two straight

Nevada's Katlyn Short returns a volley during doubles competition of Tuesday's home match against Carthage. Short and her partner, Katie Brauer, won the No. 1 doubles match, 8-6.

The Nevada Lady Tigers tennis team picked up two solid victories over the past three days. On Saturday, head coach Sam Short's Lady Tigers went to Joplin to take on College Heights and came home with a 7-2 victory, which they quickly followed up with a 5-4 win over Carthage in a very tough match at home on Tuesday.

In Saturday's match, College Heights was able to earn a victory in just one of the six singles matches that were played as Katie Brauer, Leah Creasy, Regan Kimbrough, Ashley McKinley and Brandi Perrin were all able to pick up singles wins for Nevada. In doubles competition, the story was very similar as Katlyn Short's tough day continued and she and Brauer suffered Nevada's only doubles loss.

In the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles matches, the teams of Creasy/Kimbrough and McKinley/Perrin each earned 8-4 victories.

Tuesday was a far different scenario for the Lady Tigers as they had one of their roughest outings of the season at home. "We've seen our better days," Short said during Tuesday's match.

Despite splitting the first two doubles matches of the day, the Lady Tigers No. 1 and No. 2 teams showed very strong performances. Though they were at a decided disadvantage since Brauer was forced to play with a different racquet than the one she is accustomed to, Short and Brauer came out on top of Phylicia Lewis and Veronica Sprenkle, 8-6.

McKinley and Alexa Cubbage picked up Nevada's other doubles win in the No. 3 matching, taking down Abby Bayless and Morgan Hopper, 8-6.

Creasy and Kimbrough both made up for their doubles defeat in singles play. Creasy showed a dominant performance in an 8-3 defeat of Adrianna Peoples, while Kimbrough needed an extra set to beat Madeline Marsden, 9-7. Nevada got its final singles win of the day and with it, the overall match victory, in the No. 6 match when Perrin beat Hopper, 8-2.

The Lady Tigers are now set to take a week-long break before getting back into action next Tuesday, Sept. 14, when they take on Lamar at 4:30 p.m., in Lamar.
