Capital improvement plan hearing tonight

The Nevada Planning Commission will be holding a public hearing and considering the city's five-year capital improvement plan during their monthly meeting this afternoon.

The city's five-year capital improvement plan includes $1.4 million for reconstruction of the apron at the Nevada Municipal Airport in 2011, of which about $1.3 million comes from state and federal grants; $484,000 for rehabilitating the fuel farm at the airport in 2014; $2.5 million in street construction over the next five years; $125,000 in ADA sidewalk improvements over the next five years; $350,000 for water main replacements; Camp Clark and Meadow Lane sewer construction in 2011, for an estimated $620,000, and the north and south interceptor sewer lines in 2011 for an estimated $860,000, which is a part of the multi-year sewer system upgrade that is paid for with low interest finance from the state revolving loan program.

They will also be holding a public hearing and considering a request for a special use permit for KCP&L to install an 80-foot tall communication structure at 721 N. Osage.

The airport seems to be a money pit.

Ok I confess I know nothing about the airport. That being said I have some questions. First and formost, Why does nevada even need an airport? More like airfield. Second, is there really that much traffic out there? Once again it one more the the city spends money on but has nothing to really make money. Why hanent they hired someone to start a school out there? I know I would love to take flying lessons. Heck, Someone could start a tour business out there. I think it would be nice to be able to fly around and chenk out some of the local sites by air. I mean do something with the place other than dump money into it and have only 3 or 4 puddle jumpers stop by. Start an airtaxi that runs back and forth to joplin, kc and springfield. 3 flights a day. I would pay to fly to anyone of those cities verses drive to them.

Truth be told, there are less than a handful of people who will benefit from all this money being spent at the airport. And, there is not one company that would leave Nevada, if we don't spend over a million dollars a year on it. Do we need the airport, yes, but not at this price.
