Cottey College Comets drop tough match at home

Wednesday, September 29, 2010
Kailey Kelly returns a volley during Monday's home match against Stephens College.

Even in defeat, the Cottey College Comets volleyball team gave head coach Marla Kannady Foreman and several members of her squad, as well as fans, the most fun match they have been a part of this year on Monday night as they took on Stephens College.

The Comets came into the night looking for a bit of revenge from the earlier loss they suffered at the hands of the Stars in Columbia, Mo., on Sept. 11. That didn't quite work out, but the Comets were able to muster the most intensity Foreman has seen out of them all year as they lost the second, fourth and fifth sets and Stephens came away with a 3-1 victory by the final scores of 25-21, 25-18, 25-23, 25-22 and 15-9.

"I could still feel the energy from last night's match bouncing off the gym as I walked into work this morning," Foreman said. "I had a good nights sleep, even though we came up short on the big "W." The Cottey Comet volleyball players represented well last night against their opponent in the presence of our home fans. It took Stephens five games to beat us, versus the three it took for them when we went to their place to play them on Sept. 11."

Amanda Taylor gets a kill in Cottey's first game against Stephens Monday night.

In stark contrast to the first meeting between the two squads, the Comets were able to do nearly everything right this time, and simply fell short against the NAIA level players that Stephens brought to the table. The Comets committed just seven errors in 101 serve attempts, four errors in 197 set attempts and 28 errors in 185 hit attempts as a team on the night.

"The Stephens coach stated after the match, that my players played with so much heart and intensity, that it was hard for his NAIA level players to overcome it. I was so glad to hear that, because I have been trying to instill in my players that need for heart and intensity together as a unit, to make matches so much more fun to play," Foreman said. "One of the players after the match in our after game talk, mentioned that even though it was a loss, she had more fun than she has had the entire season of playing. The team really came together and each member gave 110 percent to that match."

Kailey Kelly led the Comets with 14 kills on the night while Amanda Taylor added eight blocks -- seven solo and one assisted. Former Nevada Lady Tiger Emily Moore added 28 digs while Kelly, Natalie Larsen and Sam Pierce each recorded two aces.

With that match, the Comets' record dropped to 3-7 on the year and they are scheduled to be back in action on Friday, when they host Ozark Christian College at 7 p.m., inside Hinkhouse Gymnasium.
