Vote Yes on Proposition B
Dear Editor
Prior to joining the Humane Society of Missouri, I practiced veterinary medicine in Missouri for over 30 years. In addition to caring for tens of thousands of family pets, I provided professional services to more than 100 dog breeders, from casual hobbyists to operations housing 200 plus dogs. I also worked with multiple pet stores caring for dogs and puppies in their facilities. All of these experiences have had a profound influence on my personal decision to support Proposition B.
I am convinced Proposition B will alleviate the suffering of animals in Missouri's dog breeding facilities and provide immediate and dramatic improvements in the health and welfare of dogs and puppies housed within those facilities.
Proposition B requires annual "hands-on" veterinary examinations for each dog and mandates prompt treatment by a licensed veterinarian for illness or injury. By contrast, the current regulations specify "regularly scheduled" veterinary visits but set no time frame for these visits, stipulate no requirement that examinations be performed (the veterinarian can simply walk through the facility) and contain no provision that a veterinarian deliver prompt treatment to sick or injured animals.
Now is the time for each of us to take a meaningful stand against substandard dog breeding facilities. Before adding a dog to your family:
* Enlist your veterinarian's help when considering which type of dog best suits your lifestyle.
* Avoid purchasing from a substandard breeder -- ask to see the entire facility the puppy was raised in and, if possible, the parents. Be wary of purchasing via the Internet or at a pet store.
* Consider adopting from a shelter, there are many wonderful dogs (and cats!) in need of loving homes.
And, please vote Yes on Proposition B to send a clear message that substandard puppy mills are unacceptable in our state.
