Council to hold special meeting Monday

and the other foot falls. without public works there must be a huge surplus of money.

When you attend the meeting on Monday, ask them where the money is coming from. Then we'll all know.

Once again I'll ask: DID ANYONE SEE THE CONDITION OF THIS "HERITAGE STRUCTURE?" It had a hole in the side you could drive a truck through. It was going to collapse at anytime. I don't care what the owner said. The building could not be repaired. It was a danger to anyone near it. It should have been vacated a year ago.

I told you they would be buying more property. They want a place big enough to build a new city hall. They are following the same plan the school district did a few years ago. They were laying off teachers and buying real estate.

When asked if the city had a purpose for purchasing the property at 306 W. Cherry Street, I believe I recall that the response was they didn't know what they were going to do with the land. Why would the city pay $175,000 for more land if they have no clue what they're going to do with it? If they do have plans, shouldn't they let us know the plans, especially when asked outright?

I for one would like to know if the City is so broke why are we looking at this property. We are looking at this private company to come in and run the Public Works Dept. Because we the City can't afford to do it and this company can do it cheaper. (BS) For one the only way to do it cheaper is to cut employees and then cut wages. Lets see this money go to keeping the employees and saving there jobs.

Redavid, you're so right. I often hear of the struggles going on in Neosho and I wonder how long it will be before Nevada ends up in the same boat with the spending they seem to be intent on doing. I'm not saying we don't need some new building (not saying we do either), but this is a time for cutting back and tightening budgets, not spending more.

I looked but couldn't find any information. Can someone point me where it is written that the city is broke. And where is it written that the city manager and city council isn't looking for new businesses to come to Nevada. I can't seem to find it anywhere. The truth is: No business is looking to expand right now. NONE! If businesses were looking to expand then unemployment would not be so high. Lets be honest. We have to figure out how to do the best we can with what we have. I expect everyone to be at the council meeting on Monday at 5:30pm. Voice your opinion. Also, I've found that most cities do not like to discuss purchasing land openly because landowners take advantage of the city's needs and raises the price. See you all on Monday.

Well you can all go to the Council Meeting, but I can assure you that it's all ready a done deal with Ms. Loving....just like the Boyd Bldg.. They purchased it and had Carlini tear it down, then they had a City Council Meeting on whether they could, should, buy it. The Police Dept. Fire Dept. and City Hall all want a new bldg. As long as we have a "City Manager" that is appointed and hired by the City, and just a few repeat locals on the City Council things will continue to run this way!Yeah we can have multi million dollar City Bldgs. but does this make our City any better? No, no outside business wants to come here because of their attitudes! Look at Pittsburg and Ft. Scott, they can make their towns look halfway clean with flowers in the Summer and Christmas Lighting on the Major Streets. You would think we could at least have decorations on 54 Hwy so people would think we have a nice town! Who sees the lights at the Lake other than the vandals that tear it up. Look at the Street Lights in this town...you can barely see to drive through it. Good Luck changing the system. I think it's all ready too late. Our best choice is to move out of Nevada.

I spend to much time talking to people named concerned. As I have stated, I can't go to the meetings as I don't live in the city of nevada I only work here. This is the only place I can voice my thoughts. I will leave it to you concerned to speak for me at the meetings. Here is my direct question I want you to ask. How can the city on the one hand say they don't have the money to support public works and must turn it over to private company. Then turn right around and say they are going to buy up land that they don't know what they are going to do with it. Ask that for me please. I will be looking for an answer. The woman I know that works for the city was told a few years ago their wages were froze and the city turns around and builds two new buildings that know one uses. I guess by getting rid of her and those she works with they will be able to build their new city hall that they claim to know nothing about. Ask them to their face, what do they need the land for. Put every one of them on the spot.

Truth, just because you don't live in the city doesn't mean you can't come to city council meetings and voice your opinions. Theres no law against it. If you work here in Nevada then you have an interest in how Nevada works. And nobody has ever said the city is going to turn public works over to a private company. And if the city did who do you think that private company is going to hire? Also who do you think they are going to fire? They'll keep all the laborers and get rid of overpaid supervisors. Sounds to me Truth that you are hearing all your information from one side. Try to get both sides of the story. If you really are the TRUTHSEEKER then get out and find some.

I am just about to think that this concerned nevadian is the city mananger. lol, seems like he knows all of the answers without question. You had a question wondering were it was said that the city was broke. Well from what the employees are being told and having there wages froze for the last 2 years must say something. Also looking at this private company coming in because they can do the job cheaper. There is only one way to do this and that is to cut jobs and pay lower to our employees that work for the city. I guess this is one way that we can help the unemployment rates go up. Also you say try to get both sides of the story, you seem to know both sides why don't you tell us what both sides consist of, you knowing so much. Just seems like if we are looking for some company to come in and run our Public Works Dept. that we need to take a few steps back and look at what the problem is. Maybe some to overpaid people at the top such as City Manager, city manager's assistant.

The council doesn't take us seriously. There really isn't anything we can do except vote them out. And most Nevada citizens have their head in the sand and don't even know what is going on. Ask people about what's happening. Most don't read the paper or listen to thr radio. They don't even know of the issues. I know, I have asked people. When I say "what do you think about the city firing all the employees?, they say, "I hadn't heard about that."

I'm at a loss to see why a city this size needs so much staff at city hall. Terry, you're so right. Until someone has an issue and has to deal with city hall, most of us have no idea what goes on at city hall or in the council meetings. I've been guilty of not paying attention and not getting involved. I wonder what it will take to get the citizens involved. We all have to do our best to let people know what we perceive as things that need to be changed.

I have heard that the city wants to buy the buildings mentioned so they can make another parking lot. I agree with everyone else, with what money. Also what about the new job that is being created to handle tourism in Nevada. The city is paying whoever is hired because the Chamber of Commerce has said they werent doing the tourism anymore, not to mention the city is now also taking over the girls softball. Where is all of this money coming from?

concerned, I give up. There is no answer you or the council will listen to. We can set here and tell you over and over that some do go to the council and are ignored. I can tell you that the reps from the private company told the employees that they could apply but there was no one saying they would get a job. That to me tells me that most will be out of work. Some will be hired at a lower wage. Since you have all the answers what are the ones who don't get hired going to do for work. There is no work around here. So people will have to move. Now I know that you most likely think of them as acceptable losses but remember where they go they will tell people and businesses they work with and for how they were treated here. Those people in turn will tell their friends and so on. Pretty soon it will be known to stay away from nevada. Now don't get me wrong, I'm all for people staying away from nevada but my friends who work for the city don't agree with me. They still believe that it won't happen. I'm thinking it has already happened and that is why the city is all of a sudden come into money they didn't have before. If it wasn't going to happen the city would have already put that out to the public. They are just trying to figure out how to break the news so they aren't run out of town on a poll. Then again I could be wrong and you and ccmom will tell me.

I tell you again, that property will be where they build a new city hall, whether we agree or not.

What I am hearing here and from previous comments on other articles: concerned was not in favor of the decisions the council was making, concerned went to a council meeting (and, from the comment made, was one of two or three community members in attendance), now concerned is understanding the choices the council is making. Maybe some of you should attend the meetings and you, too, would understand. I would attend but will just choose to support until I am given a reason not to.

I will join in with one more twist. If the city buys the additional property, a new Public Admin building is built, what happens to the existing building? Does it become an empty landmark just like the old Sherrifs department building?

I for one have serious questions in my mind as to what our city administrators are thinking. Outsource this, buy that and for what? Will the city function better with a new building? Move to the new community center and turn it into offices if needed. Its already built and not being used to its potential.

To spend this kind of money for property and not "know" What we are buying it for is insane. I for one will be at the meetings from here on as I to want to see and hear the answers given.

Purely jumping to conclusions and by no means anything intended to defame anyone. Just do the math and follow the money. Because if we can we will be doing a better job than the city has in the past. Never did find out who stole the thousands of dollars years ago.

Sorry, but I'm not spreading rumors or mis-truths. I do not work for the city so can't be fired. I did many years ago work for the city, but left because I didn't care for the way some things were being done. I worked during the Hubler reign. I understand the fear associated with not knowing whether your job was going to be eliminated, I understand working for difficult people. I understand what it's like to be a scared employee. I also know what it's like to depend on your paycheck. I actually know of no one that doesn't know the fear of failure, disappointment or loss. Businesses don't come here because we have no one promoting Nevada. There is no community pride, no one representing the city in a professional light. In the past economic development was treated like a good ole boys system. People with millions of dollars to spend came here and were given very unprofessional treatment. There were no incentives for them to move here and none for them to stay. I don't blame the people in those positions...I just believe they were not prepared for the position. All I'm saying is that we have a current government interested in trying set the system right. I'm going to support it full heartedly. And there will be people that might lose their jobs...and that IS terrible. But with the way society is today...we have to think about what is best for the whole population and not just a few. There are things that we don't know...and we can't totally micro-manage the city government. Insurance, pensions, health care, retirement all these issues play into business decisions. The city needs a direction. And I believe that they have one. Some are intent on believeing that direction is to run us in the ground. I believe it is rather a direction to get things back on track. I support positive action. I support questions too. But what I really get tired of is when people are given answers to their questions...and they don't like those answers they claim they aren't getting answers. Just think what we could be and do if everyone would work towards accomplishing, building and creating...I still stand proudly in favor of the leadership and the council. (I have fought with several members of this council before-but I believe in them now). Again, I would fire those leaking mis-information, half-truths and gossip. At least that way they could get a severance package. You are right...some people can't make their businesses work in this town and they have to move out of town. Let's change that...and as one of those business owners, I would love to be able to come back and live in the city I was born and raised in. I still think Nevada is a great place...but, not for long if we don't all get on board.

Several year ago some people in El Dorada felt that the paper at that time was one sided. They felt the only thing they could do was start their own paper to tell their truth. Seeing how this paper likes to censor people right and left maybe the only thing that is left is to have another paper. One that actually knows that there are other cities in vernon county and that doesn't pander to the council. Just saying. Course none of you will be able to read this because it will be deleted b4 most of you get the chance.

Well it's not their money. We all know that. So who cares. It's the American way. I'm just sad I don't own the property. $50,000 pc. of property with $100,000 to tear down the buildings so why not pay $175,000 for the property add another $100,000 so you really paid $275,000 It doesn't matter what we think, now does it. If you would have cared you should of ran for council.
