The I.M.P.A.C.T. Nevada Tourism is getting closer to having a new location for their office and a new tourism coordinator.

Dann Sutton, board chairman, told the board during a special meeting Wednesday that he felt the board's immediate goals should be to find a building for the office, hire a coordinator and then find a location for a tourism information kiosk close to the U.S. Highway 71 and U.S. Highway 54 interchange on Austin Boulevard.

Sutton told the board that they had four possible locations for a new office: the old Subway restaurant building on Centennial Boulevard; office space in the Grand Rental building behind Sutherlands; space in the building housing the Helms Permit Agency, 101 N. Commercial, and space in the lower level of the Carnegie Building.

Board member Wendy Barton said that locating back in the Carnegie Building would not help with their goal of getting closer to the Highway 71 corridor.

And the board felt that the parking lot at the Subway location was too cramped.

Mike Turnbull, the owner of the Helms building, told the board that there was plenty of room for parking at his building.

While neither of the favored locations is right at the Highway 71 and Austin interchange, obtaining a tourist information kiosk near the highway would give travelers access to information and could direct them to the tourism office, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, Barton said.

"That will take some of the pressure off the tourism center staff," Lynda Jones said.

The board decided to consider the two locations again during their next meeting.

Sutton told the board that they currently have four applications for the tourism coordinator's position, which is paid for with money from the city's 3 percent tax on motel and hotel rooms.

To get a larger selection of applicants, the board decided to advertise the position again. The salary for the position will be based on the qualifications of the applicant. The board has about $27,000 budgeted for the position.
