Thursday, January 6, 2011

The filing period for the Nevada R-5 Board of Education closes at 5 p.m., Jan. 18, and as of Wednesday afternoon, incumbent board member Nora Quitno was the only person to have filed for one of the three seats up for election April 8. School board terms are for three years.

The other two seats available are currently held by Larry Forkner and Steve Cubbage.

Candidates can file at the Nevada R-5 Central Office, 811 W. Hickory, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Melissa Hendrix, board secretary, said that on Jan. 18, which is the final day to file, the office will be open until 5 p.m.

Missouri state law requires directors on most Missouri boards of education to be a citizen of the United States, a resident taxpayer of the district, a resident of Missouri for one year preceding the election and 24 years of age. Board members also may not be employees of the district.

Additional information on the process of filing is available from Melissa Hendrix, 811 W. Hickory, (417) 448-2000.
