Comets keep win streak alive with victories over OCC, Ottawa

The Cottey College Comets extended their winning streak to 10 games on Friday night as they defeated Ozark Christian College 89-57 in Joplin, then carried the streak on to 11 games in a 73-63 win, Tuesday, at home.
In Friday's contest Santana Cruz and Myriah Hicks teamed up to score 52 points. Cruz made 11 of her 20 field goal attempts on the way to a 27-point night and Hicks added 25 points hitting five of her seven shots from behind the three-point line. Cruz also led the team in rebounds with eight.
The Comets shot just over 45 percent in the first half as they built a nine-point lead at the break, 40-31. Cottey turned up the heat on offense and defense in the second 20 minutes as they shot over 48 percent from the field and held the Lady Ambassadors to 26 percent shooting in the second half, including 0-9 from three-point range.
Tuesday the Comets played their first home game of 2011 against the junior varsity of Ottawa University. The game was also the collection point for a food drive to benefit the local Community Outreach. Fans were asked to bring a non-perishable food item to the game.
With the two wins, the Comets brought their record to 13-1.
The Comets will face Florissant Valley Saturday, Jan. 29, at Hinkhouse Center at Cottey College at 2 p.m.
