Bourbon County attorney releases charges in meth bust

FORT SCOTT, Kan. -- Charges were officially filed Friday morning by the Bourbon County Attor-ney's Office resulting from a routine traffic stop which turned into a drug bust.

Ac-cording to the Bourbon County Attor-ney's Office, Thomas Lavon Coyan II, 30, of Fort Scott, has been charged with "unlawful acts; sale or distribution of opiates, opium, narcotic drugs or stimulants; possession of hallucinogenic drugs or other substances; simulated controlled substances and drug paraphernalia, use or possession prohibited; criminal possession of a firearm; no tax stamp; simulated controlled substances and drug paraphernalia, use or possession prohibited," court papers show.

According to the Bourbon County Attorney's Office, Jessica Dawn Wood, 28, of Fort Scott, has been charged with "unlawful acts; sale or distribution of opiates, opium, narcotic drugs or stimulants; simulated controlled substances and drug paraphernalia, use or possession prohibited; no tax stamp; possession of hallucinogenic drugs or other substances; simulated controlled substances and drug paraphernalia, use or possession prohibited," court papers show.

Coyan and Wood were arrested Jan. 28, when the 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, driven by Coyan, was pulled over by Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Jeff Scott on 225th Street, just south of Native Road. With the assistance of a Linn County K-9 Unit, Scott said, it was discovered there was a possible controlled substance in the vehicle as well as an illegal firearm.

Scott said Coyan is also being charged with a parole violation, issued by the Missouri Department of Corrections.

Along with the KHP, other agencies participating in the investigation include the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Fort Scott Police Department, Bourbon County Sheriff's Office and the Linn County Sheriff's Office.

Both Coyan and Wood remain in custody at the Southeast Kansas Regional Correctional Center.
