Show choir to host weekend competition
In Missouri, the show choir competition season is in full swing, and both of Nevada High School's show choirs, the Soundsational Singers and the Treble Effects, have won their fair share of honors this season. The Treble Effects have placed high in school divisions and won in Best Costumes and Best Opener at tournaments this season.
The Soundsational Singers have also done well, earning the spot of fourth runner up in a Harrisonville competition. They've competed in Rockbridge and Pleasant Hill so far, and now it's Nevada High School's turn to host a competition.
The annual Nevada event is one of the largest school show choir tournaments in Missouri, and is expected to draw choirs from at least 27 schools.
The event lasts all day, 8 a.m.-11 p.m., and is the largest fundraiser of the year for Nevada show choirs. Performances held throughout the day are open to the public.
The 25-member women's choir, choreographed by Ann Chapman and the 29-member mixed choir choreographed by Chad Alexander, are both accompanied by an eight-piece band and led by Choir Director Wes Morton and Assistant Choir Director Anita Byers.
Recently, the choirs performed sing-a-grams for Valentine's Day, and performances are regularly scheduled at community events and at luncheons held by local organizations. Both choirs also opened the pre-show last fall for Neal McCoy in Branson, Mo., and have opened shows in the past for Yakov Smirnoff and Joe Diffie, also in Branson.
The show choirs often perform against choirs from larger schools throughout the Midwest, in Nebraska, Indiana and Illinois.
The show choirs will finish their competition season at the Carthage tournament, March 26.
