Essay, art awards ceremony honors students' work at Carver National Monument
As part of the George Washington Carver Art and Essay program during Black History Month, fourth graders from across the four-states region answered the question, "What would you say if you could speak with George Washington Carver today?"
More than 400 entries were received in both categories. Original artwork ranges from coffee can murals to printmaking and mobiles. Handwritten and typed essays were submitted from public and private school students.
Students at Missouri Southern State University, along with park volunteers have worked hard to complete the judging; and the art works and essays are now on display at the park visitor center. The show is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Saturday, March 12. At 2 p.m., March 12, an awards ceremony will celebrate the students' work. First place earns a $50 U.S. Savings Bond. The teacher receiving the most creative classroom award will take home a newly published Carver biography and poster. Art and Essay is sponsored by George Washington Carver Birthplace Association and the Missouri Southern State University School of Education.
Administered by the National Park Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior, George Washington Carver National Monument preserves the birthplace and childhood home of George Washington Carver, scientist, educator, and humanitarian.
