Virginia M. McHenry

Virginia M. McHenry, 89, a resident of Fort Scott, died Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at the Golden Living Center in Pittsburg, Kan. She was born Aug. 30, 1921, in St. Clair County, Mo., the daughter of Charles Edward Hall and Virgie Thompson Hall. Virginia married Vernie McHenry on May 22, 1941, at Fort Scott. He preceded her in death on April 10, 1979.

In addition to being a homemaker, she provided child care for many children over the years. She enjoyed crocheting and doing puzzles of all kinds. She was referred to as Aunt Toadie by her family and the restaurant operated by her son is named in her honor. She faithfully attended the Clarksburg Valley Chapel Church of God (Holiness).

Survivors include two sons, Vern McHenry, Gardner, Kan., and Larry McHenry and wife, Mary Jane, Nevada, Mo.; a daughter, Shirley Jamison and husband, Phillip, Fort Scott, Kan. Also surviving is a son-in-law, Byron Tillery, Fort Scott, Kan.; a brother, James Hall, Ariz.; two sisters, Geneva Blake, Redfield, Kan., and Edna Mae Mealman, Wichita, Kan.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Tillery; an infant son, David Dennis McHenry; and five brothers Virgil, Edward, Lewis, Emery and Harvey Hall.

The Rev. David Tucker will conduct funeral services at 1:30 p.m., Monday, May 2, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the U.S. National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, 201 S. Main, P.O. Box 347, Fort Scott, KS 66701.
