Time to Schowe and Shine: Car show set for this weekend

Friday, May 20, 2011

Unless there is a lot of lightning and or a tremendous downpour, the fifth annual Schowe and Shine Car Show will be held at 1701 W. Austin Blvd. in Nevada on Saturday, May 21. With rain forecast for the next two or three days, organizer Dr. Ron Schowengerdt said on Thursday, "I'm hoping it will get it out of its system by then."

Schowengerdt said that the show, a fundraiser for the Nevada chapter of Habitat for Humanity, will be held at a later date if it is rained out. If the weather cooperates, Schowengerdt said this year's show may feature as many as 60 cars and trucks and even if the weather is inclement, he hopes to have at least 30 participants.

"We have a lot of people tied to this event," Schowengerdt said. "We're trying our best to help out Habitat for Humanity in the community." Schowengerdt has several local sponsors again this year. "Max Motors is our major corporate sponsor and they're bringing three exotic cars," to the show this year, he said. Other sponsors include Curtis and Sons Realty, Ernsbarger Heating and Cooling, State Farm Insurance, The Cherry Street Grill, CMJ Financial, National TV Sales and Rental and Ring TV.

There will be a lot of things going on at the show this year. Vernon County People for Pets will offer some pets for adoption that need good homes. Kids will be able to have their faces painted, and a live D.J. will be on hand for entertainment. There's going to be food, a troupe of "young ladies doing gymnastics" and a hot air balloonist doing a "glow." The balloon will just be filled with air and raised, no rides. There will be a 50/50 pot, drawings and door prizes. Schowengerdt encourages the whole community to attend.

Schowengerdt said his event brought in $3,300 last year, and "our goal is to double that amount this year. We'll see how close we get." The show begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m., but registrations will be accepted as early as 8 a.m., Schowengerdt said.

In case of bad weather, Schowengerdt said he has a tentative make up date for the show of "May 28 if we have to pull the plug," and he plans to post the information on his Web site at rsdsdds.com. Schowengerdt said a cancellation would be announced by the radio station and if there was enough time the information would be on his Facebook page. For more information call (417) 667-7134.
