Nevada parks sales tax passes
"I'm really proud of all the individuals who took the time to study a relatively complex issue and then go to the polls," an obviously relieved Nevada City Manager JD Kehrman said after the parks sales tax was approved for the third time by Nevada voters, 437-352, with the absentee ballots splitting 58 for and 30 against.
This was an unusually high turn-out for an August election. According to the Vernon County Clerk's Office, about 18 percent of Nevada voters turned out for yesterday's election with a single city issue on the ballot. The turn-out for a non-presidential state-wide election is about 20 percent.
"Awesome," was how former Nevada Parks Director Carol Branham summed up her feelings at the outcome.
"I don't know what to say. I'm speechless," Jeff Post, parks board president, said of the outcome.
This election makes the city's 1/2-cent parks sales tax permanent, as well as permanently rolling the parks property tax back to zero. And it makes this tax the primary source of money to cover the operating and maintenance expenses for the parks department.
This will allow the city to use the $500,000 or so that has come from the city's general fund for many years, to finance the construction of a new public safety building and in the future have money available for things like new sidewalks and other projects that will need to be tackled.
"A lot of individuals who had a passion for the parks did this on their own time," Kehrman said.
The parks board, the city council, past park board members and especially the members of Local 3031 used their own free time to work on this issue, he said.
Post said that now the parks board is accountable to Nevada voters for managing the use of the sales tax money to keep the parks facilities well maintained.
He said that this will not only support the maintenance of the city parks, but is will also help support economic development in the city, because whenever someone considers moving to Nevada for a job or considers locating a business here, they look at the parks facilities as one of the key aspects of the community.
