First day of school arrives

Friday, August 19, 2011
Blaze Van Dyk, 5, of Nevada stands in front of the sign at Bryan Elementary School on Thursday, so his mother can take a picture of him on his first day of school, a tradition observed each year, especially by parents and students on the occasion of the child's first day of kindergarten. Blaze said he was excited about starting school.

Vernon County Sherrif's deputy and Nevada R-5 Schools' resource officer Pat McCarty signals the traffic on Ashland Street to hold while giving another motorist the go ahead to exit the parking lot of Truman Elementary School Thursday.
Truman Elementary School teachers made their own signs and arrived at the school at 7 a.m. to help direct traffic and keep the line of cars unloading students moving. The group will continue to assist motorists and students for the next several days, according to Truman Elementary School principal Diann Marti. Teachers are left to right: Cindy Satterfield, Sherry Lindsay, Dawn Arens and Sherry Hurst.
Para-professional Anna Dennison, left, and Crystal Burch welcome students to Bryan Elementary School on Thursday, the first day of the 2011 school year.
