SPRINGFIELD--The Cottey College volleyball team cruised past Central Bible in three-straight sets on Wednesday in Springfield.
The Comets won 25-9, 25-14, 25-11.
"Last night was a chance for the Cottey Comets to be on top of their game," Cottey Coach Marla Kannady said. "I think we didn't play as well as I expected them to, but we did win the match."
Added Kannady: "Thursday's practice is going to be two hours of mainly going over passing scenarios, so we can get ourselves more in system than out when executing our plays."
Cottey led 12-5 right away in the first set. The Comets led 21-8 late before pulling out the win.
In the second set, Cottey led 10-7 early, but scored 15 of the next 22 points.
Cottey led 21-9 in the third set.
Kristina Coverdell led the Comets' attack with 10 kills. Erica Wagenknecht had seven kills, Lindsey Aldridge added six and Sam Pierce had five kills.
Taylor McCue had 20 assists from the setter position, while Bailie Turgeon had 12.
Pierce had four aces, while McCue and Rachel Massey had two apiece.
Coverdell had five blocks at the net, while Katelin Crane had two.
The team's defensive specialist, Massey had 13 digs. Pierce had eight digs and Kymee Bair had four. Coach Kannady noted the team once again had to deal with an injury.
"In game two, Kymee went down with a head injury, and did not finish the match," Kannady said. "She is a strong defensive player, and was going after the ball, when she hit her head on a roll. You always hate to see a good defensive player go out of the match with a head injury."
The Comets also had to deal with an illness, as well.
"We had our libero, Rachel Massey, playing under the influence of a virus or bug that has hit our campus lately, but she fared well enough to make some great passes to the target to keep us in system so we could be an attacking team," Kannady said.
The Comets are home tonight at 6:30 p.m. against Labette.
