We will not forget: area events in remembrance

At left, the bell is rung in remembrance of fallen firefighters in a ceremony conducted by the Nevada Fire Department in 2009. This year, the NFD will conduct a ceremony at Claude C. Earp Park, next to the fire station. The ceremony will begin at 8:55 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011. The ceremony will begin with a moment of silence followed by the ringing of a bell. The ceremony will conclude with the reading of the names of the 343 Fire Department of New York firefighters killed during the collapse of the World Trade Centers.

Other events

A remembrance event will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the United Methodist Church, 500 S. College Street, Nevada, with candles lighted and the nearly 3,000 people who were killed remembered. Local law enforcement officers, firemen and EMS and military personnel have been invited to attend and take part.

* In honor of 9/11, U.S. Marine Corps personnel will raise the flag at the opening of th the Nevada High School Tiger Pride Marching Band 5K run/walk to begin at 8:30 a.m., Sept. 10.

Registration, the day of the race, is $20.
