NEVADA WINS!

GRANBY, Mo. -- The streak is over!
The Nevada High School football team overcame five turnovers and rallied late for a 22-17 win over host East Newton on Friday night at Johnston Stadium.
Nevada snapped a 17-game losing streak with the victory.
The Tigers scored 16 unanswered points in the second half and came up with a huge defensive stand late in the game. The win is the first for the Tigers (1-2) under Coach Wes Beachler.
"I'm very proud of the kids," Beachler told KNEM/KNMO. "The kids responded to the challenge. We overcame a lot of adversity. We hope we can build on this."
Nevada had to come from behind to get the win, as the Tigers trailed 17-6 in the game. Taking advantage of a Nevada miscue, East Newton got on the board early in the first quarter. After recovering a Nevada fumble near mid-field, the Patriots needed just two plays to reach the endzone, as Jaron McCully sprinted 51 yards to the endzone for the touchdown. Colby Thomas' kick was good and it was 7-0 with 9:53 left in the first quarter.
Later in the period Nevada took advantage of an East Newton fumble on a mishandled punt. Brett Norton recovered and the Tigers had the ball on the 15 with great field position. After runs by Dalton Hendren, Trevor Hunholz and Lucas Denman, the Tigers had the ball on the one-yard line. Johnathan Klingaman ran in to the endzone on the next play for the score. The two-point conversion fell short and East Newton led 7-6 with 5:03 left in the period.
In the second period, Nevada's Nathan Slichenmeier intercepted a Rocky Liveoak pass and took off towards the endzone. But a block in the back penalty wiped out the touchdown. Still, the Tigers had solid field position. But on the second play of the drive, a fumble on the snap was recovered by the Patriots. Late in the first half, a bad snap on a Nevada punt gave East Newton great field position on the 32. On the fourth play of that drive, McCully scored on a six yard run.
The kick was good and the Patriots led 14-6 with 1:01 left in the half.
Thomas, just a freshman, kicked a 38-yard field goal with 36 seconds left to give East Newton a 17-6 cushion at the half. The drive began after Nevada's fourth turnover of the half.
Both teams traded turnovers early in the third. But Nevada's Bradey Denney scored on a 12-yard run for the Tigers with 3:52 left in the third quarter. Hunholz ran in for two, cutting East Newton's lead to 17-14.
Nevada took the lead early in the fourth quarter. After nice gains on the ground by Denney and Hunholz, the Tigers faced a fourth and one on the five. Denman ran for two yards to keep the drive going. Hunholz charged in for a three-yard touchdown on the next play. QB Alex Payne then ran in for two, giving Nevada a 22-17 lead with 9:51 left.
East Newton threatened late. The Patriots, running out of time, had the ball on the 11-yard line with just 18 seconds left in the game. Facing a fourth down and seven, East Newton went to the air. But a Liveoak pass into the endzone was picked off by Cole Sanderson, securing the win for Nevada.
The last time Nevada won a football game was on Sept. 25, 2009 against Parsons, Kan. The Tigers won that night 27-21.
