Carl Junction tops NHS tennis team

NEVADA --The final home date of the season didn't go too well for the Nevada High School girls tennis team. Visiting Carl Junction defeated the host Tigers 7-2 on Thursday at the NHS tennis courts.

The Tigers had one win in singles play and one in doubles.

Lauren Phillips of Nevada won the number-six singles match 8-1 over Shelby Willis. Carl Junction won the other five singles matches. Emily Cook defeated Nevada's Leah Creasy 8-2 at number-one singles, while Haley Pope topped Regan Kimbrough 8-2 at number-two. CJ's Megan Boline beat Alexa Cubbage 8-2 at number-three, and Rebecca O'Hanahan defeated Jessica DeCocq 8-5 at number-four.

Seirra Edwards of Carl Junction edged Nevada's Brandi Perrin at number-five, winning a tie-breaker 7-3 after an 8-all tie. Nevada won the number-one doubles match, as Creasy and Kimbrough beat Pope and Boline 8-4. Carl Junction won at number-two and three, as Cook and O'Hanahan defeated DeCocq and Kierstin Lanham 8-3 and Edwards and Kuykendoll topped Perrin and Phillips 8-5.

The Tigers begin Class 1, District 12 play on Monday at Lamar at 4:30 p.m. Nevada (6-7) is the sixth seed and Lamar (7-2) is fifth. Warrensburg is the top seed in the district and Harrisonville is second.
