Nevada softball ends regular season at Carthage Invitational

CARTHAGE -- The Nevada High School softball team wrapped up the regular season by going 2-1 on Saturday at the Carthage Invitational.

Nevada beat Carl Junction 9-1, topped Fort Osage 11-7 and dropped an 8-7 decision to McDonald County.

Nevada ends the regular season with an 18-5 record and will begin district play on Thursday in Bolivar.

McDonald County 8, Nevada 7

A seven-run cushion was not enough for the Nevada Tigers.

McDonald County scored eight runs in the sixth inning for an 8-7 win over Nevada on Saturday.

The Tigers led 7-0 in the fourth after Tiffani Long's three-run home run.

But the Mustangs had six hits in the sixth and scored eight runs against Nevada starter Christian Novak with a two-run single by Stormy Christerson, a two-run double by Courtni Smith, an RBI single by Taylor Pearcy, a two-run single by Joni Hanke and then an RBI triple from Sarah Rickman. After the inning the game ended due to the time limit.

The Mustangs (18-5) won all three meetings between the two teams this season.

Nevada scored four times in the second against Pearcy. Ashley Shumaker reached on an error and then Tori Dahmer hit an RBI double.

Casey Barker singled and Victoria Culbertson followed with an RBI double. Jalynn Heckadon was hit by a pitch, Nikki O'Bryan reached on an infield single and then Mackenzie Pritchett hit a two-run single. Heckadon and O'Bryan singled in the fourth, setting the table for Long's blast.

Novak (18-5) took the loss, allowing eight earned runs and eight hits. The junior struck out three and walked three.

Long had three RBIs with one swing of the bat, while Dahmer had two doubles and Pritchett slapped two singles.

Nevada 9, C. Junction 1

Novak allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out six in the five inning win over the Bulldogs. Nevada scored four runs in the first and four more in the second. In the first inning, O'Bryan, Pritchett and Long all singled. Olivia Culbertson reached on a fielder's choice, with O'Bryan out at the plate. Shumaker hit a two-run single and Dahmer followed with an RBI single. Barker then drove in the fourth run with a sac fly.

One inning later, the Tigers were back at it. Heckadon singled, O'Bryan walked and then Pritchett singled to load the bases. Long did the rest. The senior shortstop hit a grand slam home run to center. In the fourth, Pritchett singled and later scored for the final margin. Pritchett had three hits and three runs scored, while Long had two hits and four RBIs.

Nevada 11, Fort Osage 7

The Tigers scored 11 runs on 15 hits on Saturday morning's win over the Indians.

Nevada scored five runs in the first inning on four hits and two walks. Dahmer and Olivia Culbertson both hit RBI doubles and Victoria Culbertson had an RBI single. Pritchett's RBI single scored O'Bryan in the second for 6-2 lead. O'Bryan and Victoria Culbertson drove in runs in the third. Dahmer hit a two-run double in the fourth and Pritchett's sacrifice scored O'Bryan in the fifth. Long went four-for-four at the plate, while Dahmer had three RBIs and Victoria Culbertson and Pritchett drove in two runs apiece.

On the mound, Novak allowed four earned runs in five innings, struck out six and allowed eight hits.

Nevada 8, Aurora 0

The Tigers bounced back after a 4-0 loss to Kearney with an 8-0 win over Aurora on Friday night.

Long's fielder's choice scored O'Bryan in the first, and Long's RBI triple scored Pritchett in the third. Long came home on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead.

A three-run fourth inning broke the game open. Michaela Brewer, O'Bryan and Pritchett all scored runs in the inning. Tayten Starlin and Brewer had RBIs in the fifth, scoring Dahmer and Barker for the final margin. O'Bryan, Pritchett and Dahmer had two hits apiece.

Novak struck out 11 and allowed just two hits in five innings.
