Ceremony honors victims of violent crime

Tuesday, October 4, 2011

Martha Sander, left, executive director of the Moss House, a shelter for victims of domestic violence, tells a group of crime victims' family members, law enforcement officers and community members gathered on the south side of the Nevada Square on Monday that every 90 seconds in the United States, a victim is battered. Sander spoke during the annual domestic violence awareness ceremony which is held in the county, the state and across the country. She said part of the reason they meet is "to remember domestic violence, to remember survivors." During the ceremony, photos of victims were displayed and attendees listened to a couple of songs and released balloons bearing the names of local victims and the names of other victims from the state.
